Liz Cheney not ruling out 2024 run: Report

Liz Cheney, one of Donald Trump's loudest GOP critics, is continuing to tease a run for the presidency just months before the 2024 election.

The former Wyoming congresswoman and daughter of Dick Cheney told CNN she hasn't made a decision yet on whether to run.

Cheney, who spearheaded the January 6th committee, lost her seat in Congress as part of a wave of backlash against anti-Trump Republicans.

She has continued to weigh in on politics, mostly on liberal cable news channels hostile to Trump.

Cheney teases 2024 bid

Cheney's ongoing criticism of Trump has made her a pariah within her party and a Democrat's favorite Republican.

She has toyed with running for president before, but she hasn't made any moves with just months to go before November.

Cheney was asked about her ambitions during a softball interview with Jake Tapper, in which she criticized the "shameful" state of the party under Trump.

“I haven’t made any decisions about it yet,” Cheney said. “I’m going to do whatever is necessary to defeat Donald Trump.”

More than three years after January 6th, the Republican party remains firmly under the grip of Trump, who has all but locked up the GOP's nomination for president.

GOP in Trump's grip

Cheney, whose family's political dynasty once held significant sway over the party, has criticized the GOP's embrace of Trump and his isolationist foreign policy, which has led to an impasse in Congress on aid to Ukraine.

She has echoed Biden's campaign rhetoric painting Trump as a stooge of Vladimir Putin and an existential threat to "our democracy." But Cheney has resisted saying she will endorse Biden, which would likely damage her brand as the lost conscience of the Republican party.

“I’m not going to make any announcements or endorsements this morning,” Cheney told Tapper. "But the most important thing is to defeat Donald Trump, and I will do whatever, whatever it takes to do that.”

Cheney told CNN she is rooting for Nikki Haley in her effort to upset Trump in the Republican primary.

Haley is widely expected to go down in defeat in her home state of South Carolina this weekend.

In response to Cheney's comments, Trump spokesman Steve Cheung said, "Sounds like Liz Cheney is giving Nikki 'Birdbrain' Haley a run for her money as the leader of the Never Trump movement."
