Longtime Trump foe Andrew Cuomo concedes in New York's mayoral Democratic primary

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo once declared that President Donald Trump "is persona non grata in New York City."

However, it appears that Cuomo is himself not very popular in the Big Apple, as he was recently forced to quit the city's mayoral Democratic primary.

Cuomo: "Tonight was not our night"

According to The Hill, Cuomo conceded on Tuesday that he had lost to New York State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a far-left progressive who has been endorsed by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

"Tonight was not our night," Cuomo acknowledged. "Tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani’s night and he put together a great campaign, and he touched young people and inspired them and moved them and got them to come out and vote."

Official results delayed thanks to complex ranked choice voting system

While Cuomo may have accepted defeat, The Hill pointed out that Mamdani's victory won't be officially certified for some time thanks to New York's complex ranked-choice voting (RCA) system.

Scott Tranter is a data analyst, and he explained that "no candidate will reach the 50% plus threshold in the first round," meaning that the first release of RCA votes will not come until July 1.

"Zohran Mamdani will go into the RCV process as the favorite," Tranter noted, adding that he will face City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and former Comptroller Scott Stringer.

"In addition to his current vote lead, he has been endorsed by third place finisher Brad Lander and can expect to pick up a substantial portion of Lander’s supporters once their second choice votes are allocated in the RCV process," Tranter was quoted as saying.

Cuomo could still appear in the general election

Meanwhile, The Hill pointed out that the general election is expected to be a crowded affair featuring a variety of candidates.

They include current New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent along with fellow independent candidate Jim Walden.

Another contender is Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, who gained national prominence during the 1980s for his role as leader of the Guardian Angels.

What's more, Cuomo could be another name on the ballot as he has founded his own party which is known as the Fight and Deliver Party.
