Maine governor facing recall, after opposing Trump order
Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D) is now facing a potential recall.
This comes, according to Fox News, after Mills opposed President Donald Trump's order that looks to keep transgender individuals away from women and girls' sports.
It also comes after the recent incident that took place at the White House, where Trump and Mills got into a bit of an argument. There will be more on this in a moment.
First, however, we will look at the recall effort.
Over 25,000 signatures so far
Fox News reports that "an online petition to recall the governor of Maine has received over 25,000 signatures."
The effort is being led by Melissa Moulton. She not only started the recall petition, but she also has organized a "March Against Mills" event.
Moulton, in the Change.org petition, writes:
I am standing among many Maine citizens who are deeply dissatisfied with the policies introduced by our Governor, Janet Mills. I believe strongly that her policies are not in alignment with the wishes and values of the majority of Mainers. The feeling of disconnect between the populace and leadership is palpable and widespread.
Moulton goes on to write, "Various statistics underline rural-urban divide that has been exacerbated by the Governor's decisions."
She continues:
Additionally, several of her policies contradict the economic growth and prosperity that should be our government's priority. I am yet another citizen calling for change and improvement for our beloved state of Maine. It is imperative that we hold our elected officials accountable. I implore you to sign this petition to voice our collective dissent and to initiate the recall of Governor Janet Mills. Together we can work to ensure our government truly represents us all.
Background
The recent argument between Mills and Trump took place at a White House event for governors.
Fox separately reports:
President Donald Trump sparred with Democratic Maine Gov. Janet Mills over transgender women in sports, telling her at the White House that she must follow his executive order or "you're not going to get any federal funding," to which she replied, "we’ll see you in court."
Mills, and thus Maine, is one of the states that is defying Trump's executive order on the subject.
The New York Post reports that "The Trump administration launched an investigation Friday that could result in Maine schools losing $250 million in annual federal funding."
It is unclear, at the time of this writing, where the administration is in this investigation.
