Man arrested for making 'violent' online threats against Trump
A Florida man has been arrested for making some "violent" threats against President Donald Trump.
The New York Post reports that the 46-year-old suspect, Shannon Depararro, was arrested on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025.
As we will see, Depararro's arrest comes after he posted many social media messages essentially calling for Trump's assassination.
Depararro is now trying to use the "they were just jokes" defense. We'll have to see how that works out for him.
The details:
According to the Post, Depararro posted the messages ahead of Trump's inauguration. One of the things that he wrote, for example, was "America needs one good bullet to be saved."
After this, Depararro admitted that he actually had been banned from another social media platform - namely X - for the types of messages that he was posting. He wrote:
I’ve been banned from “X”, because I said I hope and pray someone kills him. History is supposed to repeat itself. We haven’t had an assassination in years.
Depararro, however, did not stop there. He continued to post similar messages throughout the day.
"Bullets please. Please Jesus! Save America” he wrote in one. "
The Post reports, "Atkins had been sharing his negative feelings for Trump for months, but volume dramatically increased leading up to and following the inauguration."
Arrested and charges
TMZ reports that Depararro was arrested by authorities on Friday evening. "Shannon Depararro Atkins was apprehended Friday night during a traffic stop, per police ... following an investigation that began days prior," the outlet reported.
More details about the arrest have been provided by West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo, who spoke to the media on the following day. The outlet reports:
West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo spoke to the media Saturday ... saying after they spoke to Atkins, he allegedly admitted to making a series of posts about Trump -- claiming they were just jokes. But, Chief Araujo says posts like these are never jokes -- especially in today's political climate -- and, that's why they charged Atkins.
TMZ reports that Depararro was caught "after someone reached out to the FBI National Threat Operations Center with a tip." The outlet continues, "An investigation into the alleged posts started on Monday ... and by Friday night, the suspect was in custody after a traffic stop ... during which Atkins was allegedly in possession of cocaine."
He is now facing a number of charges, including "written or electronic threats to kill, do bodily injury, or conduct a mass shooting or an act of terrorism" and "possession of cocaine." More charges, however, may be forthcoming.
