Marco Rubio may be replaced by Lara Trump
Lara Trump could fill U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio's (R-FL) seat.
This is according to a new report from The Hill.
This comes after President-Elect Donald Trump chose Rubio to be part of his incoming administration. Trump has specifically nominated Rubio to be the next U.S. Secretary Of State.
There are two questions here: first, whether the U.S. Senate will actually confirm this nomination and, second, if it does, who will fill Rubio's Senate seat?
The latest
It appears that serious consideration is being given to Lara Trump to replace Rubio in the U.S. Senate.
Chances are that you are familiar with Lara Trump, because she is one of President-Elect Trump's chief advocates as one of the leaders of the Republican National Committee (RNC). In addition to this, Lara Trump is also the wife of Eric Trump, which makes her President-Elect Trump's daughter-in-law.
When a U.S. Senate seat is vacated - as it is going to be in the case of Rubio - it is up to the state's governor to fill that seat. In this case, the governor of Florida is Ron DeSantis (R).
DeSantis has yet to weigh in on the situation, but many others have. The Hill reports:
On Thursday, Florida Sen. Rick Scott (R) said he hopes Trump picks his daughter-in-law, echoing his colleagues Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Katie Britt (R-Ala.). Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R) has also publicly backed her.
Other names have come up as potential replacements for Rubio. But, thus far, Lara Trump's is the one that has garnered the most attention.
Lara responds
Lara Trump recently spoke with Fox Business about the possibility of replacing Rubio in the U.S. Senate.
Per the outlet:
Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump told FOX Business' Maria Bartiromo that she would "seriously consider" serving in the U.S. Senate if Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis asks her to fill the vacancy that will arise when Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., resigns to serve as secretary of state.
The outlet adds, "She told Fox News' Sean Hannity that she 'would love to serve the people of Florida' and 'would love to consider' filling the seat if asked."
It is thus clear that Lara Trump is on board with the idea, but, of course, it is not up to her. It is up to DeSantis.
At the time of this writing, it is unclear when DeSantis will name his replacement for Rubio.
