U.S. Marine recruiter was 'relieved' of his duties after social media post celebrating the murder of Charlie Kirk
Following the shocking assassination of prominent conservative activist Charlie Kirk this week, a disturbing number of left-leaning Americans have openly celebrated his murder and mocked those who knew him or were mourning the tragic loss, including some U.S. military personnel.
Such grotesque disrespect for fellow Americans will not be tolerated by War Secretary Pete Hegseth, as at least one U.S. Marine learned the hard way when he was relieved of duty after he posted an anti-Kirk message on social media, according to the Daily Mail.
It has since been made clear by the War Department's leadership, as well as the heads of the four major military branches, that such unbecoming behavior will not be accepted among the ranks of enlisted and officer personnel, nor from civilian employees.
Mocking and celebrating the assassination of Kirk
Shortly after the influential conservative activist Kirk was murdered by a rooftop sniper during an event at a college campus in Utah, U.S. Marine Corps Captain Jacoby Williamson, a recruiter who has served the Corps since 2013, publicly shared his disdain for the slain man with an Instagram post that demeaned him and cruelly celebrated his untimely death.
Williamson shared a video clip of Kirk's critical commentary about progressive "diversity, equity, and inclusion" policies, or DEI, and captioned it with, "Another racist man popped," followed by the emoji for two mugs of beer clinking together in a joyous toast.
That post was subsequently highlighted by the conservative Libs of TikTok account on X, which tagged War Secretary Hegseth to get his attention and asked, "Can you please fire this lunatic?"
"Completely unacceptable"
A short time later, chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell posted on X, "It is unacceptable for military personnel and Department of War civilians to celebrate or mock the assassination of a fellow American. The Department of War has zero tolerance for it."
That post was then shared by Sec. Hegseth, who further wrote, "We are tracking all these very closely -- and will address, immediately. Completely unacceptable."
According to USA Today, a Marine Corps spokesman later confirmed that Cpt. Williamson, albeit without specifically identifying him by name, had been fired for his detrimental behavior.
"We are aware of a social media post that does not align with our core values," lead Marines spokesman Lt. Col. Joshua Benson said. "The Marine in question has been relieved of his recruiting duties, and the matter is currently under investigation."
"Zero tolerance means zero tolerance"
The post from Sec. Hegseth was later shared by U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who wrote, "Posts that celebrate or mock the assassination of a fellow American are inconsistent with Army values. Full stop."
Likewise, U.S. Navy Secretary John Phelan said in a post, "I am aware of posts displaying contempt toward a fellow American who was assassinated. I want to be very clear: any uniformed or civilian employee of the Department of the Navy who acts in a manner that brings discredit upon the department, the @USNavy or the @USMC will be dealt with swiftly and decisively."
Similarly, U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink stated, "The Department of the Air Force is aware of inappropriate comments concerning recent political violence. This behavior is unacceptable and contrary to our core values. Airmen and Guardians are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and conduct at all times."
Along those same lines, the U.S. National Guard announced, "The National Guard is aware of inappropriate comments made by some on social media concerning the tragic death of a fellow American from political violence. Such comments are reprehensible, tasteless and out of line with our values."
On Saturday, Pentagon spokesman Parnell shared the USA Today article on his account and reiterated for anybody who may have missed what was happening, "Mocking or celebrating the assassination of a fellow American is unacceptable in the ranks. Zero tolerance means zero tolerance."
