Americans have grown increasingly pessimistic about the future, with an NBC News poll from last month showing that 71% believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.
While there is wide disagreement how over how what to do, one member of Congress recently proposed a stark solution: breaking up.
According to the Washington Examiner, Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene put forward the idea of a national divorce as a way to address federal spending and cultural divisions.
We need a national divorce.
We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government.
Everyone I talk to says this.
From the sick and disgusting woke culture issues shoved down our throats to the Democrat’s traitorous America Last policies, we are… https://t.co/Azn8YF1UUy

The Examiner pointed out how this not the first time Greene has suggested that ideologically opposed sections of the country should go their separate ways.
The Georgia representative expressed a similar sentiment in late 2021, arguing that "a National Divorce scenario" would permit red states to screen those moving in from left-leaning areas.
All possible in a National Divorce scenario.
After Democrat voters and big donors ruin a state like California, you would think it wise to stop them from doing it to another great state like Florida.
Brainwashed people that move from CA and NY really need a cooling off period. https://t.co/NB2dVj7n2X— Marjorie Taylor Greene 🇺🇸 (@mtgreenee) December 29, 2021
Greene's divorce statement came after she put out another tweet condemning President's Joe Biden's surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday.
This is incredibly insulting.
Today on our President’s Day, Joe Biden, the President of the United States chose Ukraine over America, while forcing the American people to pay for Ukraine’s government and war.
I can not express how much Americans hate Joe Biden. pic.twitter.com/nHXzG67YOL

Biden has been widely criticized for traveling to Ukraine despite still not having visited East Palestine, Ohio. A train derailed there earlier this month, which resulted in the release of toxic chemicals.
Fox News reported that East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway called Biden's Ukraine visit "the biggest slap in the face" and slammed the president for "giving away millions of dollars" to Ukraine while neglecting victims in Ohio.
"That tells you right now he doesn’t care about us. He can send every agency he wants to, but I found out this morning that he was in Ukraine giving millions of dollars away to people over there and not to us," Conaway told Fox News host Jesse Watters.
Meanwhile, Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz told Fox News, "When our border is in crisis, Joe Biden goes home to nap in Delaware."
"When Ohio burns with toxic chemicals, Biden’s admin says everything is fine," Gaetz continued, adding, "So on Presidents Day, I’m not surprised that Biden is ditching America for Ukraine. He ditched America’s interests since the start of his presidency. They can keep him!"
