British Royal Family member Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex and wife of Prince Harry, just experienced a tragic personal loss that should elicit sympathy from even her staunchest critics.

Markle revealed on Tuesday that she had "cried too many tears to count" following the death of one of her beloved dogs, an adorable tri-color beagle named Guy, according to Parade.

The duchess shared on social media a heartfelt tribute to the pup she'd rescued from a shelter about a decade earlier in 2015.

Sad news to share

In a post to her new Instagram account, Markle shared a montage of photos and video clips of the dog over the years and wrote, "In 2015, I adopted a beagle from a dog rescue in Canada. He had been at a kill shelter in Kentucky and given a few days to live. I swooped him up … and fell in love."

"They referred to him as 'the little guy' because he was so small and frail, so I named him 'Guy,'" she continued. "And he was the best guy any girl could have asked for."

Markle noted that Guy had previously been prominently featured on her old social media accounts and had been by her side as she filmed "Suits," got engaged and married to Prince Harry, and had children, and said, "He was with me for everything: the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort."

She further shared how the beloved pup had "endured a terrible accident" and broken its legs before she moved to the U.K. and sang the praises of the veterinarian and his staff who'd helped surgically repair Guy and teach him to walk again.

"Devastated" by the loss of her beagle

Markle noted in her post that Guy could be seen in her new series on Netflix and wrote to her followers, "I hope you’ll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss. I think you may fall a little bit in love too."

"I have cried too many tears to count -- the type of tears that make you get in the shower with the absurd hope that the running water on your face will somehow make you not feel them, or pretend they’re not there," she continued. "But they are. And that’s okay too."

"Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy. You filled my life in ways you’ll never know," Markle added.

A noted dog lover and advocate for adoption

People magazine reported that Markle has adopted several dogs from rescues and shelters over the years and has been a public advocate of that humane practice instead of shopping for expensive designer or pure-bred dogs.

Another of her rescued pups, a German Shepherd-Lab mix named Bogart, had been adopted when Markle ran into TV star Ellen DeGeneres at a shelter and was convinced to take home the dog she'd been eyeing but was undecided on.

The outlet further noted that Markle's love of dogs, and the reciprocation of that love from the animals, even caused a bit of lighthearted consternation for Prince Harry when he introduced Meghan to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and realized that her prize Corgis who always barked at him were immediately wagging their tails and laying by the feet of his fiance.

To be sure, Meghan Markle has no shortage of critics or things for them to be critical of, but as any dog lover can attest, the loss of a beloved pet, especially after being together for so many years, is heartbreaking and deserving of some measure of condolences and commiseration.
