Some Americans are exceptionally proud of the political candidates they support and have no qualms about publicly displaying their partisan alignment for everybody else to see during the election season, typically via bumper stickers, yard signs, or flags in front of their homes.

One supporter of the Trump-Vance Republican ticket has gone above and beyond the norm in the small Massachusetts town of Hanson, however, and is now facing fines and legal actions over a "Trump 2024" sign he's repeatedly projected onto the municipal water tower, WWLP reported.

Town officials demanded the resident stop projecting the Trump sign with a cease-and-desist letter plus threats of daily fines, and have even attempted to cancel out the projection with giant spotlights aimed at the tower, but to no avail.

Cease-and-desist order sent, daily fines accruing

The New York Post reported that Hanson Town Administrator Lisa Green said in a statement this week, "On Friday, Oct. 11, the Town of Hanson became aware that a resident was projecting the image of a political sign from their property onto the Town of Hanson municipal water tower at 228 High St."

"This misleads the public into believing that this activity is sanctioned by or condoned by the Town," she continued, even though the town "does not endorse candidates for any office from any political party."

In response to the resident's acts, the town prepared a cease-and-desist order and has threatened to levy fines of $100 per day the political sign is projected.

Town attempts to counter projection with spotlights

"Highway Department employees have positioned a spotlight to shine on the water tower to dim the projection. Further measures are being considered at this time," Green's statement said.

"This individual’s actions have the potential to cost a significant amount of taxpayer dollars, including attorney fees, overtime to pay Highway Department workers to turn the spotlight on and off each day, and the potential for having to rent or purchase stronger lighting equipment," she continued. "The $100 per day fine will likely not cover these expenses."

The town official added, "The Town of Hanson respects the free speech rights of all residents, and the right of all residents to express their political views, but not on Town property or in a manner that makes it appear that the Town of Hanson is endorsing any political candidate."

Town now considering further legal action against pro-Trump resident

According to Boston ABC affiliate WCVB, it appears that the cease-and-desist order, the daily fines, and even the three Highway Department spotlights have failed to achieve the desired effect of ending the Hanson resident's projection of a Trump 2024 sign on the town's water tower.

On Tuesday, the town's select board held a meeting to discuss possible legal steps to address the issue, and Administrator Green told the outlet, "While we respect everyone's right to free speech and political points of view … the Town of Hanson does not endorse candidates for any office from any political party, nor does the Town allow political signs to be displayed on municipal property."

The outlet further reported that the resident suspected of being responsible for projecting the Trump sign onto the water tower did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

It was also noted that they received the cease-and-desist order on Saturday but have continued with the nightly display, which has now resulted in $400 in fines for each violation since the order was sent.

It remains unclear at this time what sort of legal action the town is contemplating pursuing against the resident if they don't stop projecting the partisan message on the water tower.
