President-elect Donald Trump made headlines earlier this week when he announced that Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz is his choice for attorney general.

In response, Gaetz has not only accepted Trump's nomination but also moved to resign his seat in the House of Representatives.

Gaetz: "It will be an honor to serve as President Trump’s Attorney General!"

According to Fox News, Trump characterized the Florida lawmaker in a social media post on Wednesday as being "a deeply gifted and tenacious attorney."

The president-elect promised that Gaetz "will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department."

For his part, Gaetz welcomed Trump's offer with a social media post of his own, writing, "It will be an honor to serve as President Trump’s Attorney General!"

Fox News quoted House Speaker Mike Johnson as saying that Gaetz's quick departure will provide Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis with "about an eight-week period" to find a replacement, perhaps "as early as January 3."

Gaetz is the third Republican House member to be nominated for a cabinet post

"I think out of deference to us, he issued his resignation letter effective immediately," the House speaker explained to Fox News.

"That caught us by surprise a little bit. But I asked him what the reasoning was, and he said, well, you can't have too many absences," Johnson added.

The Louisiana congressman went on to say that he has been in regular communication with DeSantis over how to proceed next.

Fox News pointed out that Gaetz is now the third House member to have been picked by Trump for a spot in his cabinet, with the others being fellow Florida Republican Rep. Mike Waltz as well as New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik.

Gaetz' nomination draws sharp opposition from Senate Democrats

However, the news network also noted that Gaetz's nomination has brought heated opposition from Democrats, including Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, who slammed the representative as a "dangerously unqualified" figure

"Gaetz has been Trump's chief defender when it comes to Trump's assault on democracy. His attempt to overthrow the government on January 6th," Murphy declared.

"And he has openly called for the abolition of law enforcement agencies if they don't get in line with conservative political priorities," the senator alleged.
