McCarthy weighs in on potential ouster of Speaker Mike Johnson

House Republicans are facing yet another potential Speaker ouster in the wake of recently passed legislation.

According to CBS News, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) stunned her colleagues last week by filing a motion to vacate Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) from his leadership position.

It's the same mechanism that was used to kick former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) out of his leadership position earlier this year.

McCarthy's ouster was the first time in U.S. history that a Speaker was removed from his post.

Why'd she do it?

Greene filed the motion after Johnson helped pass a bipartisan spending bill that temporarily keeps the U.S. government open.

Her main point of contention with the bill, other than the enormous price tag, was the fact that it does nothing to secure the southern U.S. border, yet dedicates funds to progressive causes.

CBS News noted:

Greene called the move a warning to Johnson after he brought the funding package to the floor without the customary 72-hour waiting period. The Georgia Republican bashed the spending agreement, claiming that Johnson had given away his negotiating power to Democrats. Ultimately, most House Republicans opposed the spending bill, as Democrats propelled it to passage.

Many believe it's unlikely that the House will once again reshuffle its leadership, especially as the November election is nearing.

McCarthy weighed in on the subject, saying that he doesn't believe the motion will be successful if it's even brought to a floor vote, given the timing of the election and the Republicans' thin majority at the current time.

McCarthy weighs in

"Do not be fearful of a motion to vacate," McCarthy said on "Face the Nation" on Sunday. "I do not think they could do it again."

"We're close to the election. We've watched what transpired the last time you went three weeks without Congress being able to act," McCarthy said. "You can't do anything if you don't have a speaker. I think we've moved past that."

Many believe that an ouster attempt could be devastating for the party at the current time, as the process earlier this year turned into somewhat of a political circus.

Only time will tell if Greene gains the support needed to bring the vote to the floor. Let's hope not.
