Meghan Markle accused of copying Pamela Anderson's cooking show
Meghan Markle, also known as the Duchess of Sussex, has found herself at the center of controversy once again, thanks to her new Netflix show, "With Love, Meghan."
The new show, which began streaming on Netflix on Monday, brings the viewer along with the Duchess as she shares her top domestic tips on meal preparation and living an idyllic rustic lifestyle.
As bizarre as this image is, considering Meghan Markle's image as anything but a homey housewife obsessed with cooking, the trouble began when fans of Baywatch star Pamela Anderson's cooking show pointed out eerie similarities.
The release of the Duchess's new show comes just one week after the debut of "Pamela’s Cooking With Love," and the similarities don't end at just the title.
'Copycat' Markle
Fans of Anderson's new show were quick to take to social media to lambast Markle and Netflix for blatantly ripping off of Anderson's show.
Even the producers of Anderson's show seemed to take discreet shots at Markle's new show.
Jesse Fawcett, the co-creator, co-writer, and executive producer of Anderson's new series, told The Daily Mail, "We take pride in planting the first seeds – creating original, distinctive programming that audiences love – and it’s a compliment to see our work with Ms Anderson resonate so strongly."
While this statement is carefully crafted to not ruffle feathers in a small industry, it's clear that Fawcett is making a veiled shot at Markle's show for copying the "first seeds" that "resonate" with audiences.
Casual viewers were much less tactful in their assessment of Markle's show in comparison to Anderson's, with one saying, "So similar it’s freaky."
Another reviewer labeled Markle’s new series as "inauthentic" and a "copycat." With the same rustic imagery and idyllic settings at beautiful countryside homes paired with the inherent lack of meaningful differences between cooking shows, the only standout difference is the two actresses.
Meghan Markle has spent the last few years proping herself up as a strong feminist icon, which makes this sudden decision to do a cooking show and portray herself as a housewife give many viewers whiplash.
Cynical Business Move
Both Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been busy monetizing their images in every way possible, especially now that they have been booted out of the royal family and are no longer receiving funding.
The former royal couple has had mixed success in their ventures, with Meghan Markle most recently failing to attain a copyright to the name "American Riviera Orchard." Following that setback, she instead acquired the "As Ever" branding copyright.
Meghan Markle is all about business and is working in multiple fields, which makes it very possible that she had no issues ripping off Anderson's show in a cynical business move designed to satisfy Netflix consultants.
To further confirm that theory, Netlfix insiders confirm that executives are looking at the bottom line only for this show. There's no need for authenticity at Netflix as long as ratings are good and the Duchess of Sussex makes Netflix good money.
