Melania Trump to host ceremony unveiling new USPS stamp honoring former first lady Barbara Bush
First lady Melania Trump is quite keen on upholding the traditions of the White House that were established by her predecessors in that role.
On Thursday, Trump will unveil a new commemorative postage stamp to honor former first lady Barbara Bush, according to The Hill.
Unfortunately, critics of either the current or former first ladies will undoubtedly complain, and a rather prominent member of the Bush family will be notably absent from the ceremonial honoring of the famous political family's matriarch.
Barbara Bush to be honored with commemorative stamp
The Hill reported on Monday that first lady Trump will host a ceremony in the East Room of the White House on Thursday to unveil a new stamp commissioned by the U.S. Postal Service in honor of former first lady Barbara Bush.
She was the wife of former President George H.W. Bush and the mother of former President George W. Bush, and passed away in 2018 at the age of 92.
The media, of course, will attempt to stoke controversy to sully the ceremonial event by harping on the fact that Bush was not a fan of the current president and was sharply critical of the Trumps in the final few years before her death.
To his credit, President Trump accepted and acknowledged the attacks from Bush as being justified and understandable in light of his harsh critiques of her sons, former President Bush and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who unsuccessfully challenged Trump for the Republican nomination in 2016.
Former President Bush won't be at ceremony honoring his mother
The Washington Post reported that while several members of the Bush family are expected to be in attendance at the White House ceremony on Thursday, former President Bush will not be among them.
Likely out of respect for the office of the presidency, the former president has only been modestly critical of President Trump -- though he has notably never endorsed or voted for him -- even though Trump has often been highly critical of Bush and many of his policies.
No reason was given for why he wouldn't be at the ceremony honoring his late mother, and a spokesperson declined to respond to a request for comment.
Yet, the boycott will not be family-wide, as the Post reported that Doro Bush Koch, a daughter of the former first lady, would be a featured guest speaker at the commemorative stamp's unveiling, and other Bush family members were anticipated to be in attendance, along with Alice Yates, the CEO of the George and Barbara Bush Foundation.
Only six other first ladies have been honored with a stamp
Barbara Bush will become just the seventh former first lady in U.S. history to be honored with a USPS commemorative stamp this week, with the most recent prior addition to that exclusive club being former first lady Nancy Reagan in 2022.
The other former first ladies to be honored with a stamp include Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, and Dolley Madison from the Founding era, along with Eleanor Roosevelt and Lady Bird Johnson from the modern era.
Whether Melania Trump is ever honored with her own commemorative stamp is something that will likely remain to be seen in the coming decades, and likely depends upon whether history looks back kindly or with malice at the Trump era.
