Melania Trump has addressed one of the most highly publicized episodes of her time as First Lady, explaining the famous green jacket that she wore during a media firestorm on immigration - as she confesses to forcing her husband to drop his hardline border policy.

In her self-titled memoir, Melania explains the meaning of the cryptic message on the famous green jacket that read, "I really don't care, do u?"

Melania wore the jacket to a migrant detention center in 2018 as her husband was facing outrage over his immigration policies.

Melania explains famous jacket

The Former First Lady has been the subject of constant media scrutiny since her husband's entry into politics, but she has been mostly quiet, until now.

In her new book, Melania explains that her famous jacket was a subtle response to the unrelenting criticism of the media.

"I was determined… not to let the media's false narratives affect my mission to help the children and families at the border," Melania writes.

Melania recalled journalists bombarding her former press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, with emails about the jacket, and Grisham misrepresenting Melania's comments about it to the press.

"Ignoring my comments, she told a CNN reporter she was friendly with that it was simply a jacket, a fashion choice with no underlying message," Melania wrote.

Stunning confession

In a surprising confession, Melania also took credit for convincing her husband to end the "zero tolerance" policy that led to family separations.

Melania said she found the immigration situation "unacceptable" and criticized the "lack of a clear plan for reuniting families."

"While I support strong borders, what was going on at the border was simply unacceptable. I immediately addressed my deep concerns with Donald regarding the family separations, emphasizing the trauma it was causing these families."

Melania also shared the surprising admission that she supports abortion, putting her at odds with her husband, who has touted his role in overturning Roe v. Wade.

Despite her political differences with Donald, Melania made it clear that they work as a team.

"Occasional political disagreements between me and my husband were a part of our relationship,” Trump writes, “but I believed in addressing them privately rather than publicly challenging him. I found our discussions more productive when we could have a quiet dialogue at home, out of the public eye.”
