Melania Trump spurs varied reactions with striking fashion statement
Only the most embittered liberal partisan could take issue with the notion that Melania Trump is among the most glamorous first ladies in American history, a fact of which the nation was recently reminded due to her stunning appearance at a Washington, D.C. event.
Mrs. Trump attended the National Governors Association dinner at the White House alongside her husband, President Donald Trump, and photos of her attire -- a striking, black velvet Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo -- took legions of fashionistas by storm, as Parade reports.
Melania Trump stuns at White House event
Images from the event revealed Mrs. Trump’s chic -- yet somewhat unexpected --ensemble composed of a dark jacket featuring satin lapels, matching dark trousers, black high heels, and a crisp white shirt by Ralph Lauren, according to WWD.
Once photos from the evening made their way to the Internet, online commentators did not hold back their praise for the eye-catching wardrobe selection.
One X user directed her reaction to Mrs. Trump herself, declaring, “You are absolutely stunning in that tuxedo suit!!! Class and gorgeous!!!”
Another observer was quick to agree, musing, “Stunning as always Melania!” while another opined that the first lady was a “beautiful hostess” to the group of esteemed state-level officials.
Yet another netizen specifically addressed the arguably unconventional deviation from the dress or suit many would have expected to see, writing, “I love the tuxedo look!! Very classy!”
Tuxedo spurs debate
The online reactions cited above were not the only responses to Mrs. Trump’s newly favored sartorial statement, however, as she recently received a rather scathing critique from a writer from Vogue, a publication that has had a complicated relationship with the first lady over the years.
Late last month, the White House revealed Mrs. Trump’s official portrait, taken not long after the start of her husband’s second term in office.
A black-and-white image shot by Régine Mahaux, the image is anchored by the first lady standing over a desk, again sporting a tuxedo jacket, white shirt, and cummerbund, with the majestic vista of the Washington monument in the background.
Vogue contributor Hannah Jackson weighed in on the overall look in startlingly snarky fashion, suggesting that the clothes made Mrs. Trump look “more like a freelance magician than a public servant.”
Jackson’s venom did not stop there, as she opined that “Trump looked more like she was a guest starring on an episode of The Apprentice than assuming the role of first lady of the United States.”
Disregarding Vogue
The disrespect and disdain from Vogue toward Mrs. Trump is not terribly surprising, given that despite the magazine’s decision to feature first ladies such as Jill Biden and Michelle Obama on its cover, it never afforded the same honor to Mrs. Trump during her first four years in the White House, despite her well-known background as a model.
True to herself and unbothered by the clearly politicized snub, Mrs. Trump famously said back in 2022, “I think American people and everyone sees it. It was their decision, and I have much more important things to do -- and I did in the White House -- than being on the cover of Vogue, and hopefully, that is the same energy she is bringing to the next four years in D.C.
