President Donald Trump's relationship with the Bush family is known to be contentious, having trounced former Florida Republican Gov. Jeb Bush during the 2016 GOP primary race.

However, that fact didn't stop First Lady Melania Trump from recently honoring former First Lady Barbara Bush with a stamp.

Ceremony to take place on Thursday

According to the Washington Examiner, the new stamp will be unveiled in a ceremony to be held at the White House on Thursday.

In addition to Mrs. Trump, the event will also be attended by Acting Postmaster General Doug Tulino, George and Barbara Bush Foundation CEO Alice Yates, as well as Dorothy Bush Koch, who is one of the late first lady's children.

The tradition of honoring first ladies with postage stamps dates back to 1902, when a stamp bearing the face of Martha Washington was issued.

More recently, then First Lady Jill Biden introduced stamps commemorating her predecessors Nancy Reagan and Betty Ford in 2022 and 2024 respectively.

Mrs. Trump called late first lady a "woman of strength"

Mrs. Bush served as first lady from January of 1989 until January of 1993 during the presidency of her husband, George H.W. Bush.

She passed away seven years ago within months of her husband's death and was remembered by Mrs. Trump as a "woman of strength."

"Throughout her life, she put family and country above all else.  Her dedicated service to the American people was matched only by her compassion and love of family," the Examiner quoted Mrs. Trump as saying in a statement.

"She was a woman of strength and we will always remember her for her most important roles of wife, mother, and First Lady of the United States," the statement added.

President Trump spoke up in a statement of his own, saying, "Amongst her greatest achievements was recognizing the importance of literacy as a fundamental family value that requires nurturing and protection."

Jeb Bush defended Trump in op-ed piece

Interestingly, Mr. Trump received some unexpected support from the Bush family last year when former Gov. Jeb Bush slammed the $354.8 million civil fraud fine that a New York state judge imposed.

Fox News noted how in a Wall Street Journal op-ed piece, Bush argued that the judgement and other efforts to target Trump were politically motivated.

"If these rulings stand, the damage could cascade through the economy, creating fear of arbitrary enforcement against entrepreneurs who seek public office or raise their voices as citizens in a way that politicians dislike," he wrote.
