The media continually tries to paint the relationship between Donald and Melania Trump as a terrible one, but Melania's reaction to the shooting of her husband leaves little doubt that she does care about him and their marriage is a good one.

Thankfully, Melania and their son Barron were not believed to have been present at the rally, during which the former president was shot and slightly wounded in the right ear while he was speaking on stage.

The Secret Service failed to secure a rooftop nearly 130 feet away from the rally, and shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks was able to fire repeatedly at Trump, striking him a glancing blow while killing another rallygoer and wounding two more seriously.

Melania Trump posted a message to the American people on Instagram about the shooting once Trump had been taken to the hospital and treated for his wound.

Melania's reaction

"When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life and Barron's life were on the brink of devastating change," she said. "I am grateful to the brave secret service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband.”

She called on the public to recognize her husband's humanity rather than only thinking of him as a politician who has been demonized by the left in a way no other Republican candidate has ever faced.

"A monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald’s passion - his laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration. The core facets of my husband’s life - his human side - were buried below the political machine. Donald, the generous and caring man who I have been with through the best of times and the worst of times... We are all humans, fundamentally, and instinctively, we want to help one another. American politics is only one vehicle that can uplift our communities. Love, compassion, kindness, and empathy, are necessities," the former first lady said.

“Let us not forget that differing opinions, policy, and political games are inferior to love,” the former First Lady said.

She pointed out that behind Trump's political face, he is deeply beloved by those in his inner circle, namely his family and close friends.

Calls for unity

And she, like her husband, called for unity among the people.

"Dawn is here again," she said. "Let us reunite. Now."

Her passionate letter should quiet speculation that she dislikes her husband and doesn't want to be around him.

The press seems to have mostly mistaken her distaste for public life and media scrutiny, as seen in her absence from it so far in the campaign, for distaste for her husband.

The two are very different, and the shooting has made that much very clear.
