However, a tragedy occurred away from the spotlights when former Mexican soccer star Omar Trujillo died suddenly from cardiac arrest at the age of 44.

The athlete passed away while playing soccer with friends

Fox Sports Mexico cited sources close to Trujillo as saying that he passed away on Thursday while playing soccer with a group of friends.

The network explained that Trujillo began playing soccer professionally in 1998 and spent much of his career with Atlético Morelia.

"Once his stage as a professional soccer player ended, Omar Trujillo served as councilor of the Cabildo de Morelia, in the administration of Raúl Morón (2018-2021)," Fox Sports Mexico noted.

Player remembered as a "champion" who "lives in our hearts"

Tributes to Trujillo were quickly posted to social media, including by former professional soccer player and Mexican sports commentator Moises Muñoz.

"I have just been informed that my former partner and great friend Omar Trujillo, captain of Monarcas Morelia and national team, passed away today, sad news, rest in peace my dear 'Teco,'" Muñoz tweeted in Spanish.

Fellow former professional soccer player Javier "Pastor" Chavira spoke up as well, calling Trujillo a "champion" who "lives in our hearts."

"Friend, Champion, legend in my beloved Morelia. How many anecdotes, how many triumphs and defeats, how much sadness for your departure," Chavira said in Spanish.

"But a friend never leaves as long as he lives in our hearts," he added. "And your OMAR TRUJILLO beats in the hearts of all of us who made us happy."
