Michelle Obama endorsed VP Harris but, unlike husband Barack, has not helped the Harris campaign

When Vice President Kamala Harris took over for President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee for 2024, she was soon endorsed by both former President and first lady Barack and Michelle Obama, who vowed to do everything they could to help Harris defeat former President Donald Trump.

Yet, as details begin to emerge about Barack's plans to assist Harris on the campaign trail, there has been no mention of what Michelle intends to do, according to Newsweek.

The lack of any information in that regard has prompted questions among some about whether the former first lady is as committed to aiding the Democratic nominee as she initially signaled with her endorsement and speech at the Democratic National Convention in August.

Reports reveal Barack -- but not Michelle -- is set to hit campaign trail for Harris

Newsweek noted that following their joint endorsement of VP Harris in late July and subsequent speeches on her behalf at the DNC a few weeks later, neither Barack nor Michelle Obama has done much else in the way of supporting the Harris campaign.

That is about to change this week, at least for the former president, as he is reportedly scheduled to hit the campaign trail for Harris in the critical battleground state of Pennsylvania, followed by more appearances to be announced later in this final stretch of the campaign season.

Eric Schulz, a senior advisor to Obama, said in a recent statement, "President Obama believes the stakes of this election could not be more consequential and that is why he is doing everything he can to help elect Vice President Harris, Governor Walz, and Democrats across the country."

The news was first announced last week by media outlets like ABC News and The Washington Post, and while those outlets shared the emerging details about Barack's impending contributions to the Harris campaign, there was little or no mention of the former first lady.

Where is Michelle?

Indeed, Newsweek acknowledged that, save for a supportive X post on September 10 following the presidential debate, Michelle Obama appears to have said or done nothing since then to support the Harris campaign.

It isn't like she's in hiding, either, as the outlet observed that she has posted about many other things on social media over the past month and has been making stops as part of a promotional book tour, with perhaps the closest thing to a campaign assist being her standard urging of young people to get registered to vote as Democrats.

The outlet further noted that Michelle -- who polls as more popular than her husband, who likewise polls as the most popular ex-president -- had campaigned in person on behalf of failed 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and likely would have done the same for President Biden in 2020, were it not for the COVID pandemic all but shutting down normal modes of campaigning.

However, there were rumors that she wasn't planning on doing much to support Biden's re-election bid before he dropped out, ostensibly due to hard feelings between her and the Biden family over the family's alleged mistreatment of Kathleen Buhle, Hunter Biden's ex-wife, who is a close friend of the former first lady.

Was supposed to help with "voter registration and turnout"

For what it is worth, there were already some indications that Michelle Obama might not be front and center as a surrogate for the Harris campaign, as an NBC News report in mid-September laid out some of the purported campaign plans of various high-profile Democrats, including the Obamas and former President and first lady Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Per its sources, the outlet suggested that Michelle would "focus on encouraging voter registration and turnout for Harris," and further speculated that "While she is likely to hold fewer campaign events than her husband, Michelle Obama is even more energized to help this election cycle now that it’s Harris, not President Joe Biden, on the Democratic ticket."

To be sure, there could be some plans in the works for Michelle to provide visible assistance to the Harris campaign that simply haven't been revealed yet, but at least as of right now, it sure looks like the former first lady is largely uninvolved and sitting out this particular election.
