Michelle Obama shares MLK tribute as she skips inauguration
Michelle Obama released a statement honoring Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, as she followed through on a very public split with her husband, President Barack Obama.
The MLK holiday was overshadowed by President Trump's inauguration, which President Obama attended alone, sans wife. Michelle had declared ahead of the inauguration that she would not attend - a break with tradition that fueled divorce rumors.
Michelle Obama's message
Of course, Michelle Obama's hatred of Trump is no secret, but it's not the first time she has been absent from a high-profile official event in recent weeks.
The Former First Lady also skipped Jimmy Carter's state funeral, where her husband shared a cordial chat with Trump. According to PageSix, Obama was "furious at seeing her husband yukking it up with Trump at the Carter funeral.”
As former presidents and their wives gathered for Trump's swearing-in Monday, Michelle was nowhere in sight. She also made no mention of the seismic event on her social media, instead sharing an Instagram post honoring MLK Jr. and promoting her get-out-the-vote operation.
"'Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service always inspires me. This #MLKDay, I hope you’ll join me and @WhenWeAllVote in honoring Dr. King’s life and legacy by getting involved in your community," she said.
"Whether you’re mentoring students at your local school or volunteering for a cause that matters to you, it all helps make a difference. Tell me how you’re giving back today in the comments."
Speculation swirling
Michelle Obama is not one to hide her emotions, and she has long made clear the high value she places on personal autonomy.
She was not seen with her husband at a private dinner in Washington D.C before the inauguration. Sources told PageSix that Obama has "checked out" of politics since leaving the White House.
“They don’t pretend that they have this Camelot relationship,” one source told PageSix. “They’re not trying to present that they’re this magical couple.”
With President Trump's comeback, Obama has seemingly lost all interest in keeping up appearances. In an apparent effort at damage control, her husband shared a gushing birthday message to his spouse last week that only raised more questions.
The post included a photo of the couple holding hands across an awkwardly large dinner table.
"You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life's adventures with you. Love you," the former president wrote.
