Earlier this year, former first lady Melania Trump lost her mother. Sadly, it happened again to another former first lady.

According to NBC News, Michelle Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, has passed away at 86. Her death was confirmed to the outlet via a statement from the Obama family.

The outlet reported that the saddening statement came from "Michelle and Barack Obama; Craig Robinson and his wife, Kelly; and Marian Robinson’s grandchildren, Avery, Leslie, Malia, Sasha, Austin and Aaron."

Though she kept a low profile during the time Barack and Michelle Obama were in the White House, she was described as a "fixture" in the White House during those years.

Statements released

The statement from the Obama family read, "She passed peacefully this morning, and right now, none of us are quite sure how exactly we’ll move on without her."

Michelle Obama also released a personal statement regarding the passing of her mother, calling her "my rock."

"My mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed. She was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today. We wanted to offer some reflections on her remarkable life," the former first lady wrote on X.

Former President Barack Obama posted a longer statement via his Medium account, recounting Marian's life and her influence on the entire family.

"Marian Lois Shields Robinson — our mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother — had a way of summing up the truths about life in a word or two, maybe a quick phrase that made everyone around her stop and think. Her wisdom came off as almost innate, as something she was born with, but in reality it was hard-earned, fashioned by her deep understanding that the world’s roughest edges could always be sanded down with a little grace," the former president wrote.

Social media tributes

Many across social media shared their condolences with the Obama family, with some even admitting that while they may not agree politically, they still expressed sorrow for the loss.

"We belong to different political parties but I am sorry for your loss," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "I’m so sorry for your loss. May her memory be a blessing."

Robinson was born and raised in Chicago, and grew up on the city's South Side, according to NBC.
