Mike Johnson walks off stage as teleprompter breaks down
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) had an awkward moment at the first day of the Republican National Convention when the teleprompter broke down.
The glitch created a long delay just moments after Donald Trump formally received his party's nomination for president.
“The chair announces that President Donald J Trump, having received a majority of the votes entitled to be cast at the convention, has been selected as the Republican Party nominee for president of the United States,” Johnson said Monday.
Johnson's technical issue
Johnson was about to introduce Iowa attorney general Brenna Bird when he trailed off.
"Ladies and gentlemen, it is my honor to introduce the attorney general....and there goes the teleprompter," he said.
The mild-mannered House Speaker left the stage abruptly, causing a significant delay before the nomination of Vice President J.D. Vance.
The glitch was a low point for the first day of the convention, which reached its emotional peak when President Trump made his first public appearance since surviving an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.
A wounded Trump, wearing a bandage on his ear, appeared to be fighting back tears as he entered to a hero's welcome.
The failed assassination attempt has intensified the admiration that many Americans have for the former president, whose political career has seen a remarkable resurgence since he left Washington four years ago.
Unified behind Trump
Trump's hopes of reclaiming the White House once faced skepticism, but he has since united the GOP behind him and he is now seen as the favorite to win the presidency.
Several of his former primary rivals, including Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis, spoke on the convention's second day Tuesday.
The convention's first day had another technical issue when Senator Ron Johnson (WI) read from the wrong script by mistake. He described Democrats as a "clear and present danger" despite calls to tone down political rhetoric after Trump's assassination attempt.
“That speech was written last week. They literally loaded the wrong speech,” Johnson said.
“I had taken that out. Instead I’d loaded about that we needed a somber moment in history. We should heed President Trump’s call to unite,” he said.
Trump will give his convention speech on Thursday. He says it will be more "unifying" than he previously planned in light of his brush with death.
