Military appeals court rejects Biden administration's attempt to quash plea deals in massive defeat

Outgoing President Joe Biden and his administration were slapped with a massive court defeat at the hands of a military appeals court.

According to the Daily Mail, a military appeals court ruled against plans that would have tossed several plea deals for 9/11 "masterminds" like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his accomplices - Walid Bin Attash and Mustafa al-Hawasawi.

In a nutshell, what that means is that the people behind the devastating and tragic 9/11 attacks could now be spared the death penalty -- an embarrassing outcome for the Biden administration.

In a bombshell Monday night ruling, the military appeals court published its ruling, and as a result, set the stage for the plea deals to be finalized.

What's happening?

The Biden administration originally took massive backlash from the families of 9/11 victims and the survivors after it was announced that the 9/11 masterminds would be receiving plea deals that spared them from the death penalty.

After intense public pressure, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin revoked the plea deals -- obviously not because they wanted to but because they had to as a result of the widespread public and congressional backlash.

The Daily Mail noted:

As a result, Austin placed the blame for the plea deal on retired Brigadier General Susan K Escallier - whom he fired form the case and took it over himself. Announcing the revocation of the plea deal, Austin said that the high stakes nature of the case means 'the responsibility for such a decision should rest with me.'

"Effective immediately, in the exercise of my authority, I hereby withdraw from the three pretrial agreements that you signed on July 31, 2024," Secretary Austin said at the time.

Just as the Biden administration tamped down on the public outrage and revoked the plea deals, the military court that handled the appeals opened a whole new can of worms that Biden, Austin and other administration members will have to deal with.

Advocacy groups for 9/11 victims and family members were outraged at the situation after news broke of the ruling on Monday evening.

What did they say?

9/11 Justice President Brett Eagleson delivered a statement to the outlet expressing the collective outrage among those he represents.

"We are astounded and deeply frustrated that our families were not consulted or even notified in advance of the plea deal or its subsequent revocation," he said.

Eagleson added, "These monsters need to be forced to share every piece of information they have about the attacks and be held fully accountable for the murder of our loved ones. It's not just about punishment, it's about uncovering the full truth."

The new situation has many concerned that we'll never know the true origins behind the attacks.
