Musk and Trump eye up Pelosi's federal building
President Donald Trump and advisor Elon Musk are looking to sell the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building.
This is according to a new report from Fox News.
In fact, Trump is actually looking to sell two federal buildings located in San Francisco, California, which is U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) neck of the woods.
One of the buildings literally bears Pelosi's name - the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building. The other building is located at 50 United Nations Plaza.
Background
It would appear that this is all part of the Trump administration's plan to get government spending under control.
Newsmax reports:
The administration argues that offloading the buildings will reduce maintenance costs, and it is opting to lease office space for federal workers instead. However, critics see the move as political retaliation.
The outlet goes on to quote former U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier.
She said:
It’s another example of how he is coming after Democrats. He’s coming after California, and it’s all about payback. The lease will keep going up and you will end up paying the property taxes of the lessor, whereas you don’t pay federal taxes when you are a federal government.
Pelosi has not made a public statement on the situation, and Trump has not done so either - at as of the time of this writing.
More details
The New York Post provides more details about the buildings.
Per the outlet:
The Nancy Pelosi Federal Building, a two-decade-old, 18-story tower known as the San Francisco Federal Building until its formal dedication to the former House speaker in December, sits on Mission and 7th streets in an area that has been for years plagued by open-air drug dealing, illegal markets reselling stolen goods and other crime.
The other build is from the 1930s. The Post writes, "In addition to Pelosi’s namesake building, the Trump administration is reportedly also considering selling the 1930s-era federal building at 50 United Nations Plaza, which currently serves as the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) regional headquarters."
The building became a source of much controversy back in 2023, when "hundreds of federal employees at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) assigned to the building were instructed to work from home amid worsening safety concerns." Many called for it to be closed down, as a result, but it was not.
Outlets indicate that the Trump administration is following through on the sale of these buildings. Presumably, it is trying to locate a buyer.
