Nancy Pelosi cancels trip obligations after fall in Europe

Nancy Pelosi might be 84 years old and no longer an active member of Congress, but that doesn't mean the House Speaker Emerita is slowing down. Unfortunately for her, after the recent events that unfolded in Europe, she might be forced to.

Pelosi sustained a serious injury to her hip after a fall and required immediate hospitalization and surgery as a result of the incident. Her team asserts that she canceled the rest of the engagements on her trip but "continues to work" after successful surgery.

Regardless of which party you root for, it's probably not good that any American politician is falling and sustaining serious injuries while abroad.

What happened?

Pelosi spokesperson Ian Krager gave some details:

"While traveling with a bipartisan Congressional delegation in Luxembourg to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation."

Krager continued, Pelosi "is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals."

In a photo taken just a few moments before the fall reportedly occurred, Nancy Pelosi can be seen looking a little bit wobbly, despite the photo being just a still frame. At first, you might think that Nancy Pelosi was trying to display unity by hanging onto Republican Michael McCaul, but that's not the case at all.

Nancy Pelosi was hanging onto McCaul because she was wobbly! It is unclear whether or not Pelosi's high heels were the only culprit, or if she was also suffering from something like a balance problem or osteoporosis.

Witnesses reported that Nancy Pelosi was looking unsteady right before the fall, which reportedly happened just moments after this photo was taken.

The recovery

Representative Michael McCaul, a Republican from Texas, was one of the first people to publicly comment about the incident:

"I’m disappointed Speaker Emerita Pelosi won’t be able to join the rest of our delegation’s events this weekend as I know how much she looked forward to honoring our veterans," McCaul said. "But she is strong, and I am confident she will be back on her feet in no time. Praying for a speedy recovery!"

This isn't the only scary injury to a Pelosi in recent years. Nancy Pelosi's husband was beaten by a home invader just two years ago after the man entered their residence looking for the California Democrat. Nancy Pelosi wasn't there, so David DePape attacked her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer.

In 2024, DePape was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his actions. Regardless of whether you agree with her politics or not, we hope that Nancy Pelosi can recover.
