In the wake of President Joe Biden's disastrous month on the optics front, which led to him losing mass support from within his own party, many high-profile Democrats joined in on calls for him to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

One of those higher-echelon Democrats was none other than former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who worked overtime to pressure Biden to drop out.

According to Politico, Pelosi held nothing back, telling the elderly president that he's "dragging down" Democrats, especially those on close tickets across the country.

Multiple sources reportedly told the outlet that "some Democratic lawmakers would start to grow louder in their griping about his political weaknesses."

What's going on?

One source with knowledge of Pelosi's actions said the former speaker would not be shy about pressuring Biden to drop out of the race, warning that she would even escalate it to publicly calling on him to throw in the towel.

"The speaker does not want to call on him to resign, but she will do everything in her power to make sure it happens," one of the sources reportedly said.

Another source said that Pelosi plays to win, and would say or do whatever it takes to position the party to win as much as possible in November.

"There’s nothing subtle about Nancy," the second source reportedly said. "She starts with the question: ‘What’s it take to win?’ Then works backwards."

Other high-profile Democrats, like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also called on the president to call it a day.

Politico noted:

News of Pelosi’s conversation with Biden was first reported by CNN. It emerged hours after ABC News reported that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told Biden, in two separate conversations, that it would be best for the country for him to end his campaign.

It worked!

In late-breaking news on Sunday afternoon, reports emerged that Biden is formally dropping out of the race, issuing a quick public statement with a promise to address the nation later in the week regarding his decision.

Additional reporting suggested that he's endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to take his spot in the race, though the endorsement could fall flat with Democrats who are more excited about the possibility of several other candidates, like Gov. Gavin Newsom of California.

Only time will tell who gets the top spot.
