Nebraska GOP Official Resigns

Doug Peterson used to be the 2nd Congressional District chairman in Nebraska.

He's not anymore. Over the weekend of April 6, Doug Peterson stepped down from his role after the failure of a legislative effort to change the Electoral College system in the state.

Peterson resigns

Most states currently offer a winner-take-all approach to the state's electors. Whichever presidential candidate gets the most votes, gets all of the electoral college points.

In Nebraska, however, the votes can be split.

Joe Biden had hoped that it would stay that way, as a very specific but very plausible scenario might see him edge Trump 270 electoral college votes to 268 if Joe is able to sneak at least one vote out of Nebraska.

With the potential rule change, Biden wouldn't have been able to pick up that one point in Nebraska.

That means that the 270-268 decision in favor of Biden would then be a 269-269 result and Donald Trump would own the tiebreaker.

Sure, a lot of things are going to have to fall the right way for that to have mattered, but can you imagine the type of heroes that the Nebraska GOP would be looked at as if they were able to help Trump beat Biden in November?

Decision confirmed

With that dream almost certainly not being a reality now, Peterson has decided to step down.

"On the advice of my legal counsel, I resigned from the CD 2 Chair on Saturday. I cannot comment on much other than the NEGOP is in shambles and I can no longer be associated with them," Peterson said during his announcement.

Nebraska will remain one of only two states in America that allocates its electoral votes based on popular vote in each congressional district.

All 48 other states award all electoral votes to the candidate who won the popular vote in the state.

Will it matter?

This doesn't appear to be the result that Donald Trump was hoping for in Nebraska, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost.

With the amount of momentum that Trump is currently carrying, and the rate that Joe Biden is deteriorating, Trump might not need any tricks or tiebreakers to take back the presidency.
