Netflix to premiere new 'Cold Case' docuseries on unsolved JonBenet Ramsey murder case
It has been nearly three decades since 6-year-old beauty pageant queen JonBenet Ramsey was found dead in her family's Boulder, Colorado, home on the day after Christmas in 1996, and many Americans remain fascinated by the still-unsolved case.
Reports indicate that a new docuseries about the Ramsey case will soon debut on Netflix next month that could help finally solve who murdered the young girl, according to Netflix Life.
The special series comes from director Joe Berlinger, who has developed a reputation for creating documentaries that delve deep into high-profile cold cases and serial killers.
New docuseries premieres next month
Deadline reported this week that Berlinger's new docuseries about the unsolved JonBenet Ramsey murder will premiere on Netflix on November 25.
It will be a three-part series that will reportedly "revisit the case with fresh eyes and perspective" and include interviews with individuals who played integral roles in the investigation over the years, including the young victim's father, John Ramsey, who was initially viewed as a suspect along with his wife and son.
The series, titled "Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenet Ramsey," will also reportedly question the prevailing narratives about the murder, expose the mishandling of the case by law enforcement and the media, and supposedly unveil new evidence that could result in the case finally being solved.
Countering the "sea of conspiracy theories" around the case
Deadline noted that Berlinger has already shown his penchant for documenting true crime stories with prior specials that looked closely at serial killers like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy, and Jeffrey Dahmer, as well as one that is widely credited with leading to the exoneration and freedom from prison of the so-called West Memphis Three who were falsely accused and convicted of murder.
Berlinger told the outlet of the new Ramsey docuseries, "Many people think they know the JonBenét Ramsey story and have played armchair detective for three decades, often callously pointing a finger at the very people who suffered such an unthinkable loss."
"Through unprecedented access and a comprehensive multi-year investigation, we reveal the deep flaws in how the case was originally handled, resulting in a sea of conspiracy theories that nearly destroyed the Ramsey family for a second time," he added.
A new limited dramatic series about the Ramsey case will also soon premiere
Meanwhile, Variety reported last month that another limited series about the unsolved JonBenet Ramsey murder mystery will soon debut on the Paramount+ streaming service, though a release date has not yet been announced.
That series will provide a dramatic look at the case and will feature Hollywood stars Clive Owen and Melissa McCarthy as the young girl's parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, as they dealt with the tragic loss and accusatory fingers pointed at them.
Indeed, the show's description notes that it "follows the Ramsey family, before and after the tragedy as they go through the painful loss of a child while facing intense public scrutiny caused by a media frenzy that caused this case to captivate an entire nation."
"At the heart of the series, it is the story of Patsy and John Ramsey -- exploring the unbreakable partnership of these two complex people -- as husband and wife, as mother and father -- who had committed themselves and their children to building the narrative of a perfect, privileged life only to have it destroyed one Christmas night in 1996," the description added.
David Glasser, the CEO of 101 Studios that is producing the new limited series for Paramount+, told Variety, "We have been working to bring this thought-provoking and bold project to audiences for some time now and could not be happier with the top-notch team working in front of and behind the camera."
