New York Democrats at odds over subway incident

Breitbart News reports that the recent subway incident that took place in New York has left many of the state's Democrats divided.

In case you missed it, the incident took place on the F train in Lower Manhattan, New York City.

There, a 30-year-old passenger named Jordan Neely was restrained by 24-year-old Daniel Penny, a former Marine, after Neely got out of control. Reports indicate that Neely was both homeless and mentally ill.

Video captured of the incident shows the former Marine dragging Neely to the ground and putting him in a "chokehold." Penny held Neely for 15 minutes, and Neely ended up dying as a result.

N.Y. Democrats respond

One of the loudest responses to the incident came from U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Ocasio-Cortez condemned what happened in a series of Twitter messages that she posted on Thursday.

In one message, the congresswoman wrote:

I have yet to hear a real explanation from any official hesitating to condemn the killing of Jordan Neely about what makes condemning this violence so “complicated.” Killing is wrong. Killing the poor is wrong. Killing the mentally ill is wrong. Why is that so hard to say?

Ocasio-Cortez goes on to claim that Neely was just acting out in order to get put back in prison to make his life "easier." And, she even referred to the Marine's actions as a "public execution" of Neely.

Other New York Democrats, however, are taking a different approach. New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), for example, said, "We don’t know exactly what happened here. We cannot just blatantly say what a passenger should or should not do in a situation like that, and we should allow the investigation to take its course."

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D), on the other hand, has been all over the map with her statements on the matter. But, generally, she has refrained from saying anything definite.

What now?

The question going forward is whether charges will be brought against Penny.

Penny was briefly taken into custody following the incident, but he has been released.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is reported to be considering whether or not to charge Penny.

Bragg, of course, is the same individual who has indicted former President Donald Trump on claims legal experts consider dubious, all the while allowing crime in New York to virtually go unchecked.

It's a safe bet that Bragg will do whatever he considers to be politically expedient. And, at the moment, it appears that he is awaiting the results of the investigation that is being led into the matter.
