New York Mayor Eric Adams (D) is now under investigation for allegedly pressuring the New York Fire Department on behalf of the Turkish government in September 2021, when he had won the Democrat primary for mayor but before the general election.

Adams is accused of pressing the NYFD to approve a certificate of occupancy for the Turkevi Center, the 35-story home of the Turkish Consulate on the East Side, so that it could officially open on schedule.

The center had numerous fire safety flaws, but was still able to open on September 20, 2021 with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presiding because of Adams' intervention.

The investigation centers around whether the Turkish government made illegal campaign contributions to Adams' campaign as compensation for his help in the matter.

FBI search

The FBI conducted a search of Adams' home earlier this month looking for evidence of illegal contributions by Turkey.

The bureau also took two electronic devices from Adams last week, looking for text messages that would show any sort of quid pro quo.

City Hall Chief Counsel Lisa Zornberg told the Washington Examiner on Sunday that "the mayor and our team are continuing to work with investigators and cooperate" with the FBI in the investigation.

"We hope that investigators will continue to cooperate with us and reprimand any federal officer who has improperly leaked details about this investigation as such conduct could prejudice the public and undermines the integrity of our law enforcement process," Zornberg said.

Zornberg is no doubt referencing the New York Times, which was able to obtain a copy of the FBI search warrant for Adams' house.

Was Adams targeted?

In a campaign statement on Saturday, Adams said he was providing services to a constituent, citing his position as borough president at the time.

“As a borough president, part of my routine role was to notify government agencies of issues on behalf of constituents and constituencies,” Adams said. “I have not been accused of wrongdoing, and I will continue to cooperate with investigators.”

Adams has recently been in the news for speaking out about illegal immigration and stating that he thinks it will ruin New York if President Joe Biden's current policies continue.

It makes one wonder whether his own party decided to target him with this investigation because of his comments.

It just seems like something the Democrats and Biden would do.
