NYC Mayor Eric Adams faces calls to resign as four high-ranking officials step down
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Danielle Sassoon generated headlines last week when she resigned after the Department of Justice (DOJ) dropped corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
However, one official in America's biggest city recently said that Adams should be the one stepping down.
City Council speaker calls on mayor to "step aside and resign"
According to the New York Post, that position was put forward on Monday by Adrienne Adams, who serves as speaker of New York's City Council.
"He now must prioritize New York City and New Yorkers, step aside and resign," Adams said of the mayor. "This administration no longer has the ability to effectively govern with Eric Adams as mayor."
"There is too much at stake for our city and New Yorkers to allow this to continue. We have endured enough scandal, selfishness and embarrassment, all of which distract from the leadership that New Yorkers deserve," she asserted.
"This is the opposite of public service. Our city needs a leader totally committed to protecting New Yorkers and improving their lives," the speaker went on to declare.
Trump said Adams was being politically targeted
Adams' problems began last year when he was indicted by federal authorities for allegedly providing the Turkish government with political favors in exchange for campaign donations as well as expensive overseas trips.
"As alleged, Mayor Adams abused his position as this City’s highest elected official, and before that as Brooklyn Borough President, to take bribes and solicit illegal campaign contributions," U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a press release put out by the DOJ.
"By allegedly taking improper and illegal benefits from foreign nationals—including to allow a Manhattan skyscraper to open without a fire inspection—Adams put the interests of his benefactors, including a foreign official, above those of his constituents," Williams stated.
Nevertheless, President Donald Trump maintained that the charges were simply politically motivated retaliation for the mayor having spoken out against President Joe Biden's border security failures.
Four high-ranking officials step down
Yet while Adams insists that he has every intention to remain in office, that isn't true for at least four members of his administration.
As Politico reported, First Deputy Mayor Maria Torres-Springer, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Anne Williams-Isom, Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera Joshi, and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Chauncey Parker all resigned on Monday.
"Due to the extraordinary events of the last few weeks and to stay faithful to the oaths we swore to New Yorkers and our families, we have come to the difficult decision to step down from our roles," Torres-Springer, Williams-Isom, and Joshi were quoted as saying in joint statement.
Adams responded with a statement of his own that read, "I am disappointed to see them go, but given the current challenges, I understand their decision and wish them nothing but success in the future."
