While some Democrats seem to struggle with differentiating between boys and girls, that apparently isn't a problem for former first lady Michelle Obama.

It was announced this weekend that the Obama Foundation's Girls Opportunity Alliance has pledged $2.5 million in donations to several grassroots organizations around the globe that are focused on assisting female adolescents, according to the Washington Examiner.

The funds are intended to help girls in economically challenged areas overcome gender-related societal barriers, particularly in education.

Funding pledge announced

The Obama Foundation's Girls Opportunity Alliance describes itself as seeking to "empower and educate adolescent girls around the world, allowing them to achieve their full potential and transform their families, communities, and countries."

That goal is achieved through helping leaders connect, strengthening grassroots organizations, and using "public awareness to drive action in support of adolescent girls’ education and empowerment."

In a press release on Saturday, which was the International Day of the Girl, the Alliance revealed that it had set aside $2.5 million to help support 54 organizations in 28 countries that were "offering economic support, creating safe spaces, working to end child marriage, and more."

Funding is particularly "crucial" right now

ABC News reported that former first lady Michelle Obama also released a brief video to proudly announce the pledged assistance for girls with educational needs around the world.

"These groups are changing the way girls see themselves in their own communities and in our world, helping create the leaders we need for the brighter future we all deserve," she said. "Because when our girls succeed, we all do."

The outlet noted that the announcement came as international aid groups have increasingly sounded the alarm about reduced funding and budget cuts that have hampered their efforts, which was echoed by the executive director of the Girls Opportunity Alliance, Tiffany Drake.

"The need right now, I think more than ever, is crucial," Drake said. "We were just in Mauritius and we heard it time and time again that organizations need funding. They need support."

Initial grants and additional support

ABC News noted that just about any girls-focused organization can apply for assistance from the Alliance, and if approved, can receive grants up to $50,000.

Those funds are not available to cover general operating expenses, however, but rather must be utilized for a specific project, as detailed in the application.

If selected as a grant recipient, the organization then becomes part of the broader network and also receives access to online training sessions and in-person meetings, as well as an opportunity to connect and share strategies and information with other groups.

Aside from the initial grant, the Alliance also helps the organizations use fundraising platforms, along with its network of celebrities and corporations, to garner additional funds on their own to further expand and keep its operations going.
