Rep. Omar denies the left's celebration of Kirk's murder, faces possible consequences for disparaging remarks

In the wake of Charlie Kirk's assassination last week, a disturbing number of Democrats and radical leftists have openly celebrated the act of political violence, implied that the deceased deserved or earned his murder, and mocked those who are mourning the loss of the influential conservative activist.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), a member of the progressive leftist "Squad" who has taken part in some of the above, seemed to deny that any of it had ever occurred when asked about it this week by a reporter, according to Fox News.

The congresswoman's refusal to even acknowledge what she and many of her leftist comrades have done will likely only add fuel to a Republican-launched effort to hold Omar accountable with tangible consequences for her words and behavior.

Omar denies leftist celebrations of Kirk's assassination

Approached by a reporter while walking the halls of Congress this week, Rep. Omar initially refused to respond when asked if she had concerns about the disturbing "rhetoric" coming from some on the ideological left about Kirk's public murder, as well as why some Democratic voters were "celebrating political violence."

"I don't think anybody is," Omar eventually replied, seemingly ignorant of the hundreds of teachers and school administrators, college faculty, healthcare professionals, political pundits, retail workers, actors, musicians, and writers, among others, who're now facing unemployment or other disciplinary measures after being exposed for celebrating or mocking Kirk's horrific death.

Even on the day he was killed, a Republican lawmaker's request for a spoken prayer in support of Kirk and his family following a moment of silence was met with loud and angry protests from Democrats on the House floor.

Yet, when reminded of and asked about the chaos that erupted and the Democrats' refusal to allow or participate in a public prayer, Omar stated, "We did a moment of silence, nobody prays on the House floor for anybody who has passed away."

Resolution to strip Omar's committee assignments

According to Fox News, multiple Republican lawmakers are now attempting to hold Rep. Omar accountable for her commentary about Kirk in the days after his tragic assassination, in which she seemed to disparage his legacy and suggest that he deserved to be killed over his purportedly divisive and racist remarks -- a perception based on inaccurate or out-of-context quotes.

On Monday, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) introduced a resolution that called for the House to strip Omar of her committee assignments as a consequence for her "false, vile, and disparaging remarks" about Kirk.

"Disparaging Charlie Kirk’s legacy, a God-fearing, honorable man, for boldly sharing his conservative beliefs is disgusting," Carter said. "The radical left has normalized meeting free speech with violence, and it must stop."

"No one who justifies the assassination of someone with different political views than them deserves to sit on a committee, and Ilhan Omar openly used language that incites violence towards her political opponents," he added. "Committees are for serious lawmakers, not hate-spewing politicians."

Omar insists she condemned and did not celebrate Kirk's murder

Also on Monday, according to The Hill, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) filed a resolution that not only sought to remove Rep. Omar from the Committee on Education and Workforce and the Committee on the Budget, but also to formally censure her for her remarks about Kirk.

Mace may have felt compelled to act after she was specifically named, along with President Donald Trump, by Omar as somebody on the right who has incited harassment and "violence" against her, which prompted the Democratic congresswoman to dismiss the Republicans calling out the leftist rhetoric against Kirk as being "full of s--t."

For what it is worth, Omar has clarified, since her initial remarks, that she thought Kirk's murder was "mortifying" and that she felt "empathy" for his grieving widow and children. A spokesperson for Omar further insisted that she had been "one of the first to condemn Charlie Kirk’s murder."

"She explicitly expressed her sympathies and prayers to his wife and children. She condemned his assassination and has routinely condemned political violence, no matter the political ideology. The same can’t be said about those who authored these resolutions," the spokesperson added. "In her interview, she also grappled with his divisive legacy, but she in no way implied violence was deserved, nor did she celebrate his death."
