Over 40 people have been shot and nine people killed over a deadly Memorial Day weekend in Chicago.

The city's violence continues to grow despite calls for calm under its new mayor.

The details

"Forty-three people were shot in Chicago, nine of them fatally, Friday into Monday morning during Brandon Johnson’s (D) first Memorial Day weekend as mayor," Breitbart News reported.

"On Monday morning, ABC 7/Chicago Sun-Times noted that the number of shooting victims had reached 43, with the total number of shooting fatalities climbing to nine," it continued. "One of the additional shooting fatalities was a 37-year-old man who was shot while standing on a sidewalk “in the 2300-block of West 18th Street” around 3:00 a.m. Saturday. He was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead."

The concern

At least three of those shot in Chicago over the holiday weekend were teenagers, including a 16-year-old girl struck by a bullet early Saturday.

"A 16-year-old girl was also shot while standing on a sidewalk in East Garfield Park. It happened early Saturday morning around 1:11 a.m. in the 3000 blk. of W. Jackson," Chicago's ABC-7 reported.

"The teen was taken to Mt. Sinai in fair condition with a gunshot wound to her right side. There is no one in custody and Area Four detectives are investigating," it added.

"Of the wounded in Memorial Day weekend violence was a 2-year-old girl, who purportedly shot herself with a gun she found," the Blaze reported.

"Around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, a toddler found a gun in the Chicago neighborhood of Rogers Park. The baby accidentally shot herself, according to police," it noted. She is expected to survive.

The violence continues to add to the city's reputation for violent crime that has led to criticisms of Chicago's progressive leaders with a growing exodus of people leaving the city.

The weekend's tragic events show the Windy City has turned to a modern Wild West as many take matters into their own hands through violence.
