Pam Bondi announces charges against Tesla 'terrorists'
Attorney general Pam Bondi announced federal charges against some of the "domestic terrorists" behind the recent attacks on Tesla, as a political backlash against Elon Musk turns violent.
Left-wing radicals have vandalized, burned, and shot at Tesla dealerships and electric charging stations - and in some instances have targeted random Tesla owners.
"The days of committing crimes without consequence have ended,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi.
“Let this be a warning: if you join this wave of domestic terrorism against Tesla properties, the Department of Justice will put you behind bars.”
Bondi targets Tesla vandals
A Justice Department press release from Bondi pointed to three of the most serious incidents in Oregon, South Carolina, and Colorado.
Each of the defendants is facing up to 20 years in federal prison for using Molotov cocktails to target Tesla property.
The Oregon defendant, 41-year-old Adam Matthew Lansky, was charged with illegally possessing an unregistered destructive device after throwing eight Molotov cocktails at a dealership in Salem while carrying a suppressed AR-15. The individual later returned to the same dealership and shot at the building.
A 42-year-old transgender individual named Lucy Grace Nelson, also known as Justin Thomas Nelson, was charged with malicious destruction of property for a series of incidents at a dealership in Loveland, Colorado.
Nelson returned several times to the dealership to cause havoc and spray political messages. The DOJ noted that Nelson attempted to light Teslas on fire with Molotov cocktails and was later found "in possession of materials used to produce additional incendiary weapons."
The South Carolina defendant, Daniel Clarke-Pounder, 24, wrote profane anti-Trump messages on a Tesla charging stations in Charleston before throwing Molotov cocktails at the charging stations. In carrying out this attack, Clarke-Pounder - who wrote "F--- Trump" and "Long Live Ukraine" in graffiti - accidentally set himself on fire.
"We're going to catch you"
Musk has become the target of a furious left-wing backlash over his role in the Trump administration's efforts to gut the federal bureaucracy.
The recent vandalism against Musk's company appears to fit the typical definition of terrorism - the use of violence for political ends.
President Trump, in a show of support for Musk, bought a Tesla at the White House last week as he pledged to hunt down those attacking the company.
“I’m going to stop them,” Trump said. “We’re going to catch them, they’re bad guys.”
“We’re going to catch you, and you’re going to go through hell,” he added.
