This week saw the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi testify about the stunning attack he suffered last year.

According to NBC News, Paul Pelosi appeared in court on Monday where the 83-year-old recounted waking up in a pool of his own blood after sustaining a skull fracture.

"I recognized I was in serious danger"

Prosecutors say those injuries were inflicted after Pelosi was struck in the head at his home with a hammer by David DePape.

NBC News noted that DePape is currently on trial for  attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

"The door opened, and a very large man came in with a hammer in one hand and some ties in the other, and he said, 'Where’s Nancy?' as I think that woke me up," Pelosi was quoted as saying.

"I’m asleep, and he bursts in the door, and that woke me up," he recalled before adding, "I recognized I was in serious danger."

Pelosi called 911 from his bathroom

Pelosi went on to describe how DePape was "standing in the doorway, and I assume he was 3, 4 feet away from me," explaining, "It was a tremendous sense of shock to see somebody broken into the house."

Pelosi then recounted how he was able to dial 911 and call for assistance from a bathroom before DePape snatched his cell phone away.

Police body cam footage showed officers arriving at the Pelosi household where they were met at the door by DePape and Pelosi.

Democrats attempted to blame attack on conservative rhetoric

Shortly thereafter, DePape can be seen striking Pelosi in the head with hammer before being wrestled to the ground by police.

Left-wing figures such as California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom attempted to blame Pelosi's attack on conservative rhetoric.

However, then Fox News host Tucker Carlson later noted on his show how DePape doesn't fit the profile of a typical Republican, with neighbors reporting that he flew a Black Lives Matter flag and gay pride banner outside of his home.
