It was just a few weeks ago that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) fell down some steps during a congressional visit to Europe and required hip surgery to repair the damage.

Yet, on Thursday, the longtime Democratic leader announced that she was headed back to Washington D.C. for the start of the next term of Congress, Just the News reported.

It will be Pelosi's first public appearance since undergoing surgery in Germany after injuring herself in Luxembourg in mid-December.

Pelosi headed back to D.C.

Thursday morning, former Speaker Pelosi posted a short video on her X account that showed her seated on a commercial passenger as she announced her return to the nation's capital.

"Hi, it's Nancy," a smiling Pelosi said. "I'm on my way to Washington to proudly represent the people of San Francisco in Congress."

"I'm honored to do so to share our San Francisco values," she added. "Thank you for giving me that honor."

House Dems aim for "perfect attendance" on first day of new Congress

Politico reported that former Speaker Pelosi was not alone among Democrats making a triumphant return to Washington D.C. after suffering a health scare last year, as she will be joined in doing so by Rep. Dwight Evans (D-PA), who has been absent from the Capitol building since he experienced a "minor stroke" last May.

The goal for House Democrats is to have "perfect attendance" on hand for the swearing-in of members for the new term on Friday and the immediate vote thereafter for the new term's speaker.

The Democrats are expected to vote in lockstep for Pelosi's successor, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), to be the speaker, while current Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who has faced dissension within the GOP ranks but has the endorsement of President-elect Donald Trump, can only afford to lose one vote and still remain in the powerful leadership position.

Pelosi returned to California just a few days after surgery

The New York Post reported just a couple of weeks ago on December 18 that former Speaker Pelosi had returned to her home in California after undergoing hip surgery days earlier following a fall down some steps.

Spokesman Ian Krager told the outlet, "Speaker Pelosi is well on the mend and continues to work."

The former speaker had been part of a bipartisan congressional delegation that had traveled to Europe to mark the 80th anniversary of the critical Battle of the Bulge in World War II, but injured her hip when she slipped in her high heels on some marble steps at a palace in Luxembourg while gathering together with the delegation for a group photo.

Incredibly, despite the injury, Pelosi managed to stand for the photo after her fall, though she required the support of Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who can be seen holding her hand in the picture.

The following day, Pelosi underwent a "successful hip replacement surgery" at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center at Landstuhl Army Base in Germany, according to Krager, and as the Post noted, returned to California to continue her recovery just a few days later.
