Ex-Speaker Pelosi won't attend Trump's second inauguration event
A number of prominent Democrats despise President-elect Donald Trump that they can't even pretend to be civil for one day to attend the inauguration of his second term in the White House on Jan. 20.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) just vaulted to the top of that list of Trump haters as her spokesperson confirmed that she will not be at Trump's inaugural ceremony on Monday, the New York Post reported.
She will join at least a dozen or so other high-profile or elected Democrats who've already expressed their intent to skip the traditional event marking a peaceful transfer of power, including former first lady Michelle Obama and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), among several others.
Pelosi not going
ABC News reported on Thursday that former Speaker Pelosi's spokesperson informed that the Democratic leader would not attend President-elect Trump's inauguration.
No explanation was given for why she would be a no-show for the high-profile quadrennial event, which she attended in 2017 when Trump was sworn in for his first term in office. She, of course, went on to become arguably Trump's biggest nemesis over those four years, which culminated in her leading two impeachments against him.
The outlet noted that Pelosi broke her hip last month during a congressional trip to Luxembourg, from which she is still recovering and using a walker to get around, but that is no excuse for her absence since she managed to attend the first day of Congress' new term on Jan. 3 and the election certification at the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Michelle Obama won't be there
The news about ex-Speaker Pelosi skipping President-elect Trump's inauguration came just a few days after reports revealed that former first lady Obama would not be there for the event, given her deep contempt and disdain for the man.
An unnamed source close to Obama told People magazine, "There's no overstating her feelings about [Trump]. She's not one to plaster on a pleasant face and pretend for protocol's sake. Michelle doesn't do anything because it's expected or it's protocol or it's tradition."
"She served in the public eye and did all the public good that she could for eight years as first lady," the source added. "You'll see her when she has a project or cause to promote but she doesn't feel the need to be a public figure anymore."
That announcement came just a few days after Obama was a no-show at the late former President Jimmy Carter's state funeral in Washington D.C., and though a spokesperson chalked up her absence to a "scheduling conflict," it is notable that the seating arrangements for that event would have had her seated right next to Trump if she had been there.
Inaugural boycott by some House Democrats
It won't just be Nancy Pelosi and Michelle Obama skipping Trump's inaugural ceremony, however, as Newsweek reported that more than a dozen House Democrats have similarly declared their intentions to not be there, and dozens more remained undecided on whether or not they'd attend.
A variety of reasons were given for some of the planned absences, with some being honest about their loathing of Trump or supposed fear of his supporters, while others suggested they had plans to attend other events marking Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Yet, not everybody is upset at the Democratic display of disunity for Trump's inauguration, including the incoming president's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., who addressed the developing situation last month when there were just beginning to be rumblings about some Democrats skipping the major event.
In a Dec. 14 X post, Trump Jr. wrote, "Apparently a large group of Democrat legislators plan to boycott my father’s inauguration, which is great as it will make room for a lot more actual patriots to attend. They have my complete and total endorsement to stay at home."
