PGA-LIV merger could be a big win for Trump
President Donald Trump could get a big win if the PGA tour and LIV Golf do indeed merge together.
This is because, according to the Washington Examiner, some of Trump's own golf courses could benefit from the merger.
It remains to be seen, though, whether the two entities will merge.
Trump has certainly been doing his part, holding negotiations at the White House, in recent weeks.
Background
The New York Times provides the background on this situation.
Per the outlet:
Since the start of secret talks in April 2023, PGA Tour executives and their Saudi counterparts have been weighing how they could somehow blend the premier American golf circuit with the Saudis’ LIV Golf operation. But negotiators have struggled to design a deal that would satisfy regulators along with players, investors, and executives.
This is where Trump comes in. The outlet goes on to report that Trump has essentially been trying to help the two sides reach a deal, as a mediator.
The Times writes:
Before Mr. Trump returned to power on Jan. 20, Mr. Biden’s Justice Department had been reviewing term sheets that called for the Saudis to invest $1.5 billion in a new commercial arm created by the PGA Tour . . . The chance now to explore potentially cozier terms is a remarkable turnabout
Still, it is unclear how much progress, if any the two sides have made.
How this could be a win for Trump:
The Examiner explains how a merger could be a big win for Trump.
The outlet writes:
Trump’s real estate properties have vast financial gains to be made, should the merger go through and the PGA begin hosting tournaments at his properties again.
It should be noted that these golf courses are technically owned by the Trump Organization, which is currently being run by Trump's two oldest sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.
The LIV side of things is perhaps even more beneficial for Trump. The Examiner notes:
LIV, upon coming onto the scene began, largely played at Trump properties. Trump Bedminster and Trump Doral venues were large parts of the first two LIV seasons. During the 2024 election, they did not schedule any events on Trump properties. In 2025, the organization is back to playing on Trump properties as LIV is set to host a golf tournament at Trump’s Doral golf club in Miami next month.
Besides owning golf courses, Trump himself is an avid golfer. It would appear to be his go-to hobby whenever he gets some free time - and he is a fairly decent golfer.
