There seems to be somewhat of an epidemic of horrifying plane crashes this year, and that was evidenced once again in Minnesota after a small plane crashed into a family's home.

According to People, a husband and wife are speaking to the press after a small plane crashed into their Brooklyn Park, Minnesota home over the weekend, describing hearing a "boom" sound when it happened.

Homeowner Kenneth Tobacman made the media rounds this week in the wake of the plane crash that ultimately destroyed their home after it was set on fire from the horrifying crash.

Luckily for their sake, they made it out of the situation alive, but the same can't be said for the plane's occupants, which included a U.S. Bank executive who perished in the crash.

What happened

"All of a sudden there's a big boom," Tobacman said during an appearance on Good Morning America, adding, "The lights went out, and I saw a flash."

"The lights went out, and I saw a flash," he continued. "Sparks or something or a little bit of smoke. I thought, 'What the hell?’”

He was also thankful that his wife, Mary Butler, and their dog were outside of the home when the plane crashed, admitting that if they were inside, he probably couldn't have rescued them in time, given how quickly the house was destroyed by the crash and resulting fire.

“If she hadn't been, I probably could not have rescued her or the dog,” he said. “It happened that quickly. It's really fortunate that she was out when the plane hit."

Tobacman received immediate assistance from his neighbor, Sean Riddler, who recalled how quickly the situation went from really bad to worst-case scenario right before his eyes.

"I'd say I made it to the house in about 30 seconds from impact," said Riddler. "It was already on fire. In probably another 30 to 45 seconds, the entire house was completely engulfed in flames."

Statement released

Local emergency officials, including the Brooklyn Park Fire Department, released a statement on the plane crash.

"The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office is working on recovering any fatalities and scientifically confirming the identities of the person(s) aboard the aircraft," the fire department told the outlet.

It added, "The NTSB is in the process of recovering the plane and will move it to a secure location for further examination. While an initial report is expected in approximately two weeks, it will not include a determination of cause."

While the situation is definitely a nightmare, it also could have been much worse.
