Alarms were raised this past weekend after family members told authorities that former NFL star Sergio Brown and his mother were both missing.

As Fox News reported, the case took a tragic turn when the body of 73-year-old Myrtle Brown was found in a creek near her home.

Elderly woman's death classified as a homicide

The network noted that Mrs. Brown lived in the Chicago-area suburb of Maywood, Illinois and police were called regarding her whereabouts on Saturday.

According to Chicago's WGN, an examination by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office found that the elderly woman died from multiple injuries consistent with an assault and her death has been classified as a homicide.

Sheila Simmons is the victim's sister, and she told the news station that she last spoke with her sibling this past Thursday.

Simmons explained that she received a telephone call at around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday morning about how her sister and nephew couldn't be reached.

Simmons then proceeded to drive to Brown's home, whereupon she found the house to be in disarray. Although her initial search produced no results, Brown was discovered after the sun rose.

"We’re going to find out what happened because it’s not normal for my sister to not answer her phone, not to respond to text messages," she was quoted as saying.

"People have been reaching out to her since Friday. No one was able to reach her," Simmons recalled. "Now, I got the call this morning saying that she’s missing, so immediately I came out here and find out my sister is dead."

Meanwhile, Sergio Brown remains unaccounted for and family members have not heard from him. The Maywood Police Department is looking for Brown and has asked anyone who knows his location to call either  708-368-4131 or the department's anonymous tip line at 708-450-1787.

Sergio Brown played for six years in the NFL

NBC 5 Chicago reported that Brown graduated from Proviso East High School in Maywood and attended the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

He went on to play defensive back from 2010 through 2016 with the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills.
