Poll finds that Americans oppose Biden's 'catch and release' illegal immigration policy

A new poll has found that the majority of Americans do not agree with President Joe Biden's "catch and release" approach to illegal immigration.

The poll comes from the LA Times and YouGov. The pollster surveyed some 1,573 U.S. adult citizens between Dec. 9 and Dec. 14, 2022.

The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

But, that's not really going to come into play much here.

The findings

One of the questions that the pollster asked participants is this: "where should people who illegally enter the U.S. across the southern border be sent while they await a decision on whether or not they will be allowed to remain in the U.S.?"

Only 17% of participants said that illegal immigrants ought to be allowed to stay. 18% said, "not sure." The remaining 65% took the opposing approach.

Of that 65%, 23% of participants said that the illegal aliens ought to either be detained where they entered the U.S. or in another part of the U.S. But, a clear plurality - 42% - said that the illegal immigrants ought to be "sent back to the country they originated from."

Significantly, a majority - 53% - of Democrats chose one of these three options. Only 26% of Democrats said that illegal immigrants ought to be allowed to stay in the U.S. 20% chose "not sure."

Accordingly, it's fairly clear where the majority of Americans stand on this issue.

Context

This poll is a clear rebuke of President Biden's "catch and release" immigration policy. As its name would suggest, under this policy, an immigrant who illegally enters the U.S. is caught and released into a U.S. community while that immigrant awaits his or her immigration court hearing. This is the policy that Biden adopted after becoming president, but the policy was also seen under former President Barack Obama.

The administration of former President Donald Trump, however, adopted a different policy - the "Remain in Mexico" policy. Under this policy, immigrants who enter the U.S. illegally have to wait in Mexico for their immigration hearing.

The poll would suggest that a majority of Americans prefer Trump's Remain in Mexico policy to Biden's Catch and Release policy.

This all comes as illegal immigration is taking place at an astronomical rate under the Biden administration. The 2022 Fiscal year saw over 2.3 million illegal alien encounters with several months seeing in excess of 200,000 encounters.

It is further reported that, between February 2021 to October 2022, the Biden administration released some 1.4 million illegal aliens into American communities under Biden's Catch and Release policy.
