Throughout the course of last year's campaign, President Donald Trump made removing illegal migrants a key part of his election platform.

A poll from earlier this month suggests that Trump has a greenlight to carry out that agenda, finding that 61% of voters support his plan.

Strong backing for deportation push

According to Breitbart, that survey was conducted by the polling firm Cygnal between July 1 and July 2 among 1,500 general election voters.

Participants were asked, "Do you support or oppose deporting those illegally in the United States back to their country of origin?"

The poll found 61.3% indicated that they favor such deportations, among whom nearly 41% voiced "strong" support for removing those who are residing in the country illegally.

In contrast, only 34.7% of registered voters are against deporting illegal migrants, with 17% stating that they are "strongly" opposed.

Interestingly, the survey observed that "Hispanic voters are now 11 points more likely to support deportation than two months ago."

Sharp partisan divides emerge

However, results varied considerably when participants were broken down along party lines, with 94% of Republicans expressing support.

In contrast, only 26% of Democrats back deporting illegal aliens, whereas 68% are against doing so. Meanwhile, 59% of independent voters support deportation,n whereas 37% oppose it.

Similar political divides emerged when respondents were asked about recent raids being carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

The raids are favored by 89% of Republicans and opposed by 86% of Democrats. When taken as a whole, 49.5% of poll respondents support the raids while 47.5% oppose them.

ICE agents targeting "worst of the worst"

An ICE press release issued on Wednesday noted that "70% of ICE arrests are of criminal illegal aliens with convictions or pending charges."

"Additionally, many illegal aliens categorized as 'non-criminals' are actually terrorists, human rights abusers, gang members and more—they just don’t have a rap sheet in the U.S.," it continued.

The press release further stressed, "Secretary [Kristi] Noem unleashed ICE to target the worst of the worst -- including gang members, murderers, and rapists. President Trump is putting the American people first by removing illegal aliens who pose a threat to our communities."
