President Biden expresses anger at Mark Zuckerberg ending 'fact-checking' services
Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg shocked the social media world and the news media after announcing that effective immediately, the company's fact-checkers would be quashed.
Not surprisingly, Democrats threw hissy fits in the wake of the announcement, which is likely because so-called "fact-checking" was the only way they could control narratives and information they didn't want made public.
According to The Guardian, President Joe Biden is the latest Democrat to express anger over Zuckerberg's announcement, calling the decision to end the fact-checking component of the company "really shameful."
The reactions came after Zuckerberg announced that the company would now use a feature similar to what is used on X -- "Community Notes."
What did he say?
While many mocked the president for likely not even knowing what social media is, let alone fact-checking, the outgoing president told reporters about his apparent frustrations with the decision.
"The whole idea of walking away from fact-checking as well as not reporting anything having to do with discrimination regarding … I find it to be contrary to American justice," Biden told reporters during a press call on Friday.
He added, "Telling the truth matters."
The Guardian noted:
Zuckerberg said last week that the decision to end the factchecking practice on Facebook, Instagram and Threads was made because Facebook’s factchecking, brought in December 2016, had done more harm than good in terms of public trust.
Zuckerberg seems to have changed his mind regarding the idea of fact-checking after the 2024 election.
"The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards, once again, prioritizing speech,” Zuckerberg said. “So we’re going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms."
The decision was applauded by many, including many of Zuckerberg's critics, including Republicans who have been censored into the ground by Zuckerberg in the past.
Planning for the future
Many believe that Zuckerberg and other major tech players, such as Jeff Bezos -- and obviously Elon Musk -- have clearly signaled that they're ready and willing to work with the incoming administration, which will obviously only benefit their own interests.
One can't blame them for that, and on top of that, they're finally making good decisions for their customers and Americans in general.
It'll be interesting to see who else in that world boards the Trump Train.
