Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's charitable foundation banned from raising and spending funds: Report

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle aren't having the best year, and the hits keep coming for the unpopular royals.

According to the Daily Mail, the couple's foundation, Archewell Foundation, has been banned from raising or spending funds after it was found delinquent "for failing to pay fees and submit records."

The outlet wrote, "Records show it was declared delinquent in January for not filing its annual registration renewal fee reports or renewal fee since February 2023."

The charitable foundation was established in 2020. The foundation's delinquent status is the latest embarrassment as the couple attempts to stay relevant.

What happened?

The foundation was officially declared delinquent by California's Registry of Charities and Fundraisers. The reason given was the foundation's failure to submit appropriate records to the state.

The Daily Mail noted:

The foundation received a delinquency notice and warning of assessment penalties and late fees along with the threat of a suspension or revocation of its registered status from California's Attorney General Rob Bonta earlier this month.

"An organization that is listed as delinquent is not in good standing and is prohibited from engaging in conduct for which registration is required, including soliciting or disbursing charitable funds," according to the state's website.

News of the delinquency status raised eyebrows given that recently -- like last week -- the couple announced "the expansion of a partnership between The GEANCO Foundation in Abuja and the Archewell Foundation."

The foundation responded to the news, downplaying it as an unintentional oversight that a check wasn't included in its mailings, and hoped to resolve the situation by sending the governing body a new check, according to the outlet.

Social media responds

Like any other Harry & Meghan controversy, social media users had plenty to say about their latest PR blunder.

"Hmmmm - would the recent Nigerian trip would make them be in breach of this order given they knew about it BEFORE they went?" one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "They knew about this before they went overseas and knew they were not supposed to be doing anything through that charity."

Only time will tell if the royal couple will be able to get their foundation back in good standing.
