Prominent Democrat trashes Harris-Cheney alliance: 'Huge misstep'

After Kamala Harris' spectacular implosion, Liz Cheney has nothing to show for her pious grandstanding about Donald Trump and "democracy."

Indeed, some Democrats are blaming their devastating 2024 losses on the party's embrace of Cheney, a notorious war hawk whose father, Vice President Dick Cheney, played a role in the invasion of Iraq.

According to far-left Minnesota lawmaker Ilhan Omar (MN), the party made a "huge misstep" by allying itself with Cheney - whose legacy may have alienated Arab and Muslim voters in the battleground state of Michigan.

The Cheney "misstep"

In an interview with the Minnesota Star-Tribune, Omar said Harris made a mistake by cozying up with Cheney, whose name is "synonymous with war."

“You have the one name for my generation and generations younger than me that is synonymous with war,” Omar said of Cheney. “It does say something about where your priorities are even if those are not your priorities."

A self-described principled conservative, Cheney, along with her father Dick Cheney, endorsed far-left progressive Harris in a bid to save "democracy" from Trump.

The hope of winning never-Trump Republicans

The Harris campaign had embraced Cheney in the hope of winning Republican voters turned off by Trump.

But the Cheney voter turned out to be a negligible constituency as Trump secured re-election with the best showing of any Republican presidential candidate in decades.

The Cheney-Harris alliance was a pronounced shift from the Bush era, when the left regularly villainized the Cheney and Bush families as war criminals.

But Liz Cheney became a hero to many Democrats after the Capitol riot on January 6th, 2021, as she emerged as a prominent critic of Trump and his supposed threat to "democracy." While she won support from the left, her anti-Trump activism sparked a backlash from the right and led to her losing her seat in Congress.

Trump triumphant

While Democrats cozied up with a notorious war hawk, Trump tapped into anger over the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. In fact, Trump won the vote in Dearborn, Michigan, one of the largest Muslim communities in the nation.

Despite her well-known hatred of Trump, Omar credited him for meeting personally with leaders in Michigan, something Harris did not do.

"I think that personal touch for that community made the difference,” Omar said. “We could have had that personal touch.”

Having demolished the Democrats' coalition and rendered "Never Trump" obsolete, Trump is now heading into his second term with his approval ratings surging to record levels.

Read it and weep, Liz.
