Criminal charges were announced on Tuesday against Tyler Robinson, the suspected assassin of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed last week during an event at Utah Valley University.

While announcing those charges, Utah County District Attorney Jeff Gray also publicly shared an exchange of text messages between Robinson and his transgender roommate and romantic partner, in which the alleged shooter appeared to confess his crimes, according to Breitbart.

Incredibly, at least one mainstream media reporter seemed to look past the shocking brutality of the admitted murder and instead highlighted the purported confessed killer's expressions of love and concern toward his partner.

Confession amid text exchange

During the Tuesday press conference, DA Gray read aloud the entirety of a post-shooting text exchange in which Robinson directed his roommate to retrieve a note he'd left under his keyboard, then proceeded to confess to the assassination of Kirk.

When asked, "You weren’t the one who did it, right?" Robinson replied, "I am, I am, I’m sorry."

Asked a moment later why he'd done it, the alleged shooter explained, "Why did I do it? I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out."

Throughout the exchange, Robinson repeatedly referenced his ultimately failed efforts to retrieve the rifle he'd left behind, which belonged to his grandfather, and his worries about what his father might do if it wasn't recovered.

He also repeatedly expressed his love and concern for the roommate, instructed them to delete the incriminating exchange, and urged them not to discuss anything with the police or the media.

Humanizing and romanticizing the alleged killer

Breitbart reported separately that, in reaction to that damning text exchange, ABC News reporter Matt Gutman seemed to set aside the apparent confession and focused instead on the "very touching" expressions of affection from the alleged assassin to his roommate.

"I don’t know if we have seen an alleged murder with such specific text messages about the alleged murder weapon -- where it was hidden, how it was placed, what was on it, but also, it was very touching, in a way that I think many of us didn’t expect," Gutman said.

He further noted that the exchange provided a "very intimate portrait" of the relationship and that Robinson was "speaking so lovingly about his partner" after having just brutally murdered Kirk in front of thousands of people, including his own children.

Later, Gutman doubled down on the sentiment and how the "duality" of the situation was "heartbreaking on so many levels," in that contrasted with the horrific slaying of Kirk was the "portrait of a very human person, a very human experience from this entire family."

Criminal charges filed, death penalty sought

Breitbart noted that Robinson has been hit with seven criminal counts, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and multiple counts of obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

DA Gray also announced that the state of Utah had filed its notice of intent to seek the death penalty against Robinson, if convicted.
