Protracted probe of Trump golf course closed by Westchester County DA

In a bit of rare positive legal news for former President Donald Trump, it was announced last week that Westchester County (NY) District Attorney Mimi Roach was closing an ongoing investigation into valuations of a golf club owned by the Trump Organization in Briarcliff Manor, as Fox News reports.

The probe centered around whether misleading valuations had been provided to state officials in order to reduce the taxes due on the Trump National Golf Club, but it now appears that no charges are set to be filed against the former president or his namesake company.

Investigation over

A statement issued by the Westchester District Attorney's Office said, according to the New York Post, that it had “conducted an investigation regarding certain properties owned by Donald J. Trump and/or the Trump Organization located in Westchester County, New York.”

“Our investigation is now closed. We approached this investigation as we do all of our investigations, objectively, and independent of politics, party affiliation and personal or political beliefs,” the statement added.

Speaking to CBS News about the decision to end the investigation, Roach stated, “Part of why I'm saying anything at all is that I think it's really important, more important than ever in our country, to make sure that people understand that we have independent prosecutors, we have a justice system that operates independent of politics.”

“I can stand here and proudly say that I'm one of those prosecutors, and I look at every subject of any investigation, every organization that's a subject of an investigation, the same way,” said the Democrat who initiated the probe back in 2021.

Trump reacts

As is his common practice, Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Thursday to publicly respond to the news from Westchester County.

“After going through a criminal investigation for two years by the district attorneys [sic] office in Westchester County, New York, it was just announced that the case has been dropped, and no charges will be filed,” the former president began.

Trump continued, “This was the honorable thing to do in that I did nothing wrong, but where and when do I get my reputation back?”

Referencing the remaining mountain of legal problems he must face, Trump added, “When will the other fake cases against me be dropped? Election interference!!!”

One down, many more to go

Though the end of the Westchester County probe was surely welcome news to Trump, it came during the same week he was indicted on federal charges in Miami and amid a host of other legal entanglements, both current and threatened.

However, as Newsweek notes, progress on a least a couple of Trump's pending matters will likely be stalled by the case brought by the Department of Justice, at least according to New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is probing the former president's family and business enterprises.

“In all likelihood, I believe that my case, as well as D.A. [Alvin] Bragg and the Georgia case, will unfortunately have to be adjourned pending the outcome of the federal case,” said James, referencing Trump's prior indictment in New York state court and a pending decision on possible charges in the Peach State.

James concluded, “It all depends upon the scheduling of this particular case. I know there's gonna be a flood – a flurry of motions – motions to dismiss, discovery issues, all of that. So it really all depends,” but the line remains that Trump has some busy – and highly consequential – months ahead of him.
