Rapper Tory Lanez, imprisoned for prior shooting of Harris surrogate Megan Thee Stallion, stabbed repeatedly by fellow inmate
When failed 2024 Democratic nominee Kamala Harris took over former President Joe Biden's similarly failing campaign, she attempted to rally the Democratic base by aligning herself with popular but controversial pop culture and hip-hop stars, such as rapper Megan Thee Stallion.
Megan Thee Stallion's surrogacy for Harris came roughly four years after she was shot by fellow rapper Tory Lanez, who was reportedly just stabbed multiple times by a fellow inmate in a California prison, according to the Associated Press.
It is unclear how former Vice President Harris feels about the brutal prison attack on the man who previously assaulted one of her top 2024 surrogates, largely because Harris has all but disappeared from public view following her devastating loss to President Donald Trump last November.
Stabbed more than a dozen times
ABC News reported that rapper Tory Lanez, real name Daystar Peterson, was hospitalized on Monday after he was repeatedly stabbed by another inmate while serving a 10-year sentence at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi.
Peterson was convicted in 2022 on a trio of felony charges related to his shooting both feet of Megan Thee Stallion, real name Megan Pete, after a Hollywood Hills party in 2020 -- a shooting he has long insisted he didn't do.
According to a post on Peterson's Instagram account, he was "stabbed 14 times, including seven wounds to his back, four to his torso, two to the back of his head, and one to the left side of his face. Both of his lungs collapsed, and he was placed on a breathing apparatus. He is now breathing on his own."
The post added, "Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through. He also wants to thank everyone for the continued prayers and support."
Alleged assaulter already serving life sentence for murder
According to Los Angeles Fox affiliate KTTV, Peterson's assailant has been identified as fellow inmate Santino Casio, who is serving a life sentence following a conviction in 2004 for second-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder.
Since being incarcerated, Casio has had additional time added to his life sentence without parole for assaulting another inmate with a deadly weapon in 2008 and again in 2018 for being caught in possession of another deadly weapon manufactured within the prison.
It remains unclear why Casio attacked Peterson or what led up to the stabbing, but the Kern County District Attorney’s Office and the California Correctional Institution are said to be investigating the incident.
Rapper proudly endorsed Harris, served as campaign surrogate in 2024
It was at the end of July 2024 that USA Today reported on Megan Thee Stallion's endorsement of then-VP Harris at a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, in which the controversial and hyper-sexualized female rapper twerked on stage and performed slightly cleaner versions of some of her extremely explicit hit songs.
"We about to make history with the first female president, the first Black female president," the rapper told the crowd at one point, then at another said, "Now I know my ladies in the crowd love they body, and if you want to keep loving your body, you know who to vote for."
Looking past the rapper's decidedly non-family-friendly lyrical content and sexually explicit performance, media outlets like CNN gushed over the rapper's endorsement of Harris and heralded the fact that both women wore somewhat similar blue pantsuits at the rally, albeit with Megan's skintight suit including a midriff-baring white shirt underneath the jacket.
The Houston Chronicle took the praise a step further by noting the candidate's "bold choice" in featuring the rapper as a top surrogate for her campaign and surmising what that said about Harris' "politics and attitude" in her electoral face-off against President Trump.
