Rep. Jamie Raskin suggests that Trump's strike on Iran was 'a high crime and misdemeanor'
President Donald Trump generated headlines this past weekend when he revealed that a "very successful attack" on Iran's nuclear facilities had been carried out.
The move sparked outrage among Democrats, with some in Congress suggesting that Trump should be impeached.
Rep. Jamie Raskin alleges "a violation of the war powers of Congress"
According to Breitbart, one of them is Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin, who discussed the subject during a Monday appearance on MSNBC's "The Weeknight."
At one point in the interview, host Alicia Menendez asked if Raskin agreed with New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's claim that Trump's strike on Iran was an impeachable offense.
"Well, without saying what anybody should do in any particular situation, undoubtedly a violation of the war powers of Congress, the usurpation of the war powers of Congress would be an impeachable offense, would be a high crime and misdemeanor," he replied.
"I mean, you know, Israel said, in what Israel did on its own, we set them back 2 or 3 years, so that’s not an emergency," Raskin insisted.
Congressman admits that Democrats lack the votes for impeachment
"Remember the president can only assert the power to use [the] military in a context in which there’s an imminent threat to us, and that clearly wasn’t there. So we can add this to a very long list of things," the lawmaker continued.
"But obviously talk of impeachment today when we’re in the minority and we can’t even get Republicans to vote with us on a single bill to try to restore sanity is somewhat hypothetical," Raskin acknowledged.
"But I’m with my friend AOC in saying we’ve got to keep a very strict catalog of all of the violations of the Constitution that are taking place," he added.
Raskin's remarks came one day after Ocasio-Cortez put up a social media post in which she said Trump's actions were "a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers."
Obama and Biden both struck targets without authorization
She went on to accuse the president of having "impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations," something Ocasio-Cortez said was "clearly grounds for impeachment."
The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers.
He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations.
It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.

However, one social media user responded by asking the artificial intelligence program known as Grok if former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden had ever ordered military strikes without authorization from Congress.
The program replied that Obama and Biden had "taken military actions without prior Congressional approval multiple times," including in Libya, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen.
